crawfish/crayfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I got one...$1.99 haha just a regular guy, I want to check it out and see how it works out with the fish and such. He hides all the time so I havnt gotten to take a picture or anything, but I will get one soon hopefully. Its about an inch long right now. I have seen him a few times, not really sure where he is hiding, but I am sure its not the cave I made for him haha.

Yeah, they tend to not hide in caves etc, normally dig under the thing you've made, lol.

I have one that is about 3.5 inches long. Caught him out of the local creek. He is in my small 10 gallon. I'm setting up a Pickerel tank for my 55g, so I don't think he will make it into that one. Don't want him eating my fish! My two cats seems to enjoy watching him though.....

I read that they are burrowers, but this guy is tiny, I really didnt think he would burrow much haha but obviously he is proving me wrong. So are they nocturnal or do they just hide pretty much all the time? I was trying to see if it came out when the lights went out, but I still never saw it.

Sneaky guys I guess haha

I bought a crayfish today at Petland, I threw him in there as a treat for the Largemouth Bass.

I came home later and see the Crayfish comfortably resting inside a log hole while the Channel Cat is outside upset at the fact that this little thing took his spot.

The Largemouth Bass just looks at him and leaves. The Bluegill pays him not mind.

I think I have a new tenant in the tank

I may have to protect him when he molts. How long does it take for them to regain hardness in the exoskeleton after molting? 24 hours? 48 hours?

24-48 hours sounds about right, but to properly molt the need a fair amount of calcium from the water to harden their shells. in your current setup if he molts he is going to become what you originally put him in there for ... a treat.
