crawfish/crayfish?

24-48 hours sounds about right, but to properly molt the need a fair amount of calcium from the water to harden their shells. in your current setup if he molts he is going to become what you originally put him in there for ... a treat.

How do you introduce calcium into the water for them? I want to keep mine as a permanate resident so I want to do whats best for him.

How often do they molt and how will I know? I would think it would be quite obvious, but if he is in a cave a the molted shell is in the cave is it obvious if you see to crawdad?

Also, is there a specific suggestion for food for the little guy. Right now I just put in sinking pellets for the cichlids and he seems to pop out and grab a few once the feeding frenzy is over. But do they do better with meat? ie shrimp or something? Or are pellets just fine for them...and def need to know about the calcium thing. Does this affect the other fish in the tank?

Well I think he just molted...I never saw him do it, he went into the cave a day and a half ago, closed up the door and didnt come out until tonight and it looks a little bigger.

How do you know if it is male or female and has anyone have had them breed? Just curious...

You can see in some of the pics that his cave was all walled in, none of those rocks are there now, the pics are probably all out of order

A great way to help him get the calcium he needs is to throw an eggshell in there for him. they love em especialy just before a moult. If you want you can crumble it up in there so that it blends in with the substrate and then you wont have to look at a half an egg in your carefuly set up aquascape.

I am not sure what kind of cray that is but looking at the fish you have in there in a few months most crays will be big enough to make a nice snack out of most of them.

im from ga, but i call them crayfish. ive got one that lives in a little tank under my big tank and he gets the remains of mangled feeder fish no one eats
