Insane spike in temperature in socal is heating up my tank to about 85F. Anyway I can cool the water down? I thought my heater was the problem but damn, it's the weather. HELP!

What fish do you have and what temp are you trying to cool the tank down to?

If the tank is in a room with windows then draw the blinds, if the tank has a lid remove it, if you have AC in the room with the tank run that for a little while...

Thats what i've been doing to keep my tank cool the last few days through a heatwave here...

I really dont worry for my fish since it just makes them eat more lol

but when it gets too high, I freeze water in big ziplock bag then I just put it inside my tank and it slowly cools it down, but this all depends on the size of the tank. You can do a waterchange, those never hurt

Another method is to have a fan blowing across the surface of your water... that will also help cool it down a bit...

Depending on what stook you have 85 isn't that bad. Its 110 here in Fresno and my tank gets up to 87. In the past to keep my reef temps down I would freeze two litter bottles and put them in my sump.

I too live in. I and had the same problem . First mistake we did was put the tank in our room specially mine being a 60 gl in a small room . I tried the fan thing and didn't work and didn't have money for a chiller . So what I did was buy an ac unit for my room and covered the rest of the window with black aquarium vinyl to reflect the sun . I have the ac set to maintain my room at 72 dg and it keeps my tank at a steady 79 dg .. Which is tons better than the 85 dg it was reaching without it .

I have a 80G with 10 pygos...I love it how they are more active but they peck at each other more. ATM I changed the thermostats to 72, never turn lights on, closed blinds, and had the ac on all day. It dropped to about 83F. I dont want to add frozen objects to my tank and scare my babies. Thanks for the advices guys! I feel bad for the bro in fresno, damn its way hotter there ! I am in long beach and I thought it was hot....slapped myself right now.

I have my 200 gallon african cichlid tank in my garage here in SoCal... Water's up to 85 degrees in the last few days... I have a big window fan on all day and my nightly routine includes keeping my garage door open at least an hour each night with the fan blowing outside air into the garage to cool off the whole area... I have frozen ice in zip lock bags just in case temp goes up to 90 degrees or more which I'll put in my sump... So far have not used them... Been also doing water changes more often, 2 to 3x a week...
