I am going to build a private beach, outside and in Maryland. For stingrays.

I am currently looking for property that I can build this on; it might end up in my basement, but I would much rather have this outdoors. Heating bill be damned, I will have a (comparatively) large pond that has a beach that I can lay on and feed my stingrays.

I’m thinking it should be inside a greenhouse. I’d like to do this mostly on my own, but I will go through the painful steps of finding a contractor to get it done if I have to.

Does anyone have any experience/advice with any venture even remotely similar to this? Anyone have any advice? Good ideas for pond design?

This is going to be like a koi pond. Sounds crazy, huh? Wait until you see pictures.

Any help/insight/advice would be awesome.

Yes! Definitely is a monster idea. Come hell or high water, this is happening. This is a life goal.

If anyone has any experience with building a large tank for rays, or knows more about a rays natural environment / construction needs / etc, hook it up!

i would think your biggest hurdle will be freezing ground in winter months? or is this a summer only project?

Hmmm, sounds like a neat idea. I've thought about something similar myself.

What I would do is this: dig down several feet, with whatever footprint you intend to build. Pour a concrete basin, perhaps with one end sloping upwards to make a "beach". Then build a greenhouse on top of the ready-made foundation walls of the concrete basin. Then throw in a truckload of sand to make the bottom smoother. Maybe add in some underwater lights so that the rays are easier to see. And of course whatever plumbing is necessary for filtration, unless you plan on doing this with only plants, like severum1's doing.

If you really wanted to get the price tag going up, plumb it into a system with a wavemaker, and you could cause some natural wave action on the beach (nothing too rough, or you'd never be able to see the rays).

However you do it, this should end up being a great build to watch :grinno:
