Creating natural, functional cichlid display tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I was in the UK I didn't mind the winter so much, but they drag on a bit too long.
Will be getting a mix of professional help and DIY for the house, I think the tank will be getting professionally done as I would never hear the end of it if something went wrong and I flooded the new house. Once I'm ready I will start a thread for hints and to keep the motivation up as its a strange setup so will appreciate any input if you have done it before.
Hopefully your new setup will be running by then, looking forward to what you come up with.
Look forward to seeing it.

WOW!!!! INCREDIBLE!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this thread!!!

Thank you I appreciate your nice comments. Glad you enjoyed it.
Can I ask you some questions eh? So my tank has 2 corner overflows so thats gonna kill m scape, my 120 has 4 uaru, 2 hoplos, 2 keyholes, and 1 L141 pleco. sooo.. i was think on adding 7 rams and 30 tetras? would it be a more natural look? I saw your tetra and ram tank, how many gallons and how many tetras... also my tank is 4 feet long if i put a 3 feet light would it create enough light and enough shadows? I envy and look up to your scapes, your rams scape is the best... i was wondering... i can get some vertical birch braches.. was thinking of standing them up to make columns. Rocks where do you get them form? and how big should they be, where do you get them form? Rivers? and how to grow that hairy alge?

Personally I would say your tank is pretty much stocked. Uaru are pretty big fish fully grown and will fill your tank nicely.
I'm also a firm believer that less is often more. A little self control in a fish shop can sometimes make a display look better. Must admit I have trouble practicing what I preach in this regard.

My tetra and ram tank is 210 gallons, it has 11 rams and about 180 black neons and around 30 bentosi tetra. I've recently added 9 peruvian angelfish to the tank.

Regarding the light yes I think a 3feet tube will do the trick.
I sometimes put silver foil under part of the light to create shadows.
Growing algae is easy. Do smaller water changes for a while, increase your lighting hours and if possible let natural sunlight hit your tank.

Regarding rocks I have collected most of them from beaches and rivers. I have nought a few from garden centres in the past.

I love the way that tank looks, i was hopping for this kind of stocking:

- 4 uaru
- 2 keyholes
- 30-40 rummtnose

- 5 Brochis corys
- 9 corys
- 2 hoplos
- 8 curviceps, or 5 checkerboard and 3 apistos

I want to have the uaru in the middle and most of the other fish hanging out on the bottom in the dense leaf litter like this:
