Crenicichla celidochilus

I think the 'lacustris group' dorsal spot vanishes with age on the celidochilus. Ours had none at 3.5" in December 2007.

Over the years I've noticed that the dorsal spot is not always present in females. Some simply do not have it.

Hi!
The dorsal spot has nothing to do with females or males....and most of the celidos (babies/juveniles) has not a dorsal spot..just some of them.

Hola Felipe - good to hear from you! I think it's really interesting that only some Celidochilus have the dorsal spot, I wonder why? Thx. for your input Scat, I was thinking Ed's fish photos were small juvies....

I also thought that only the females of the Lacustris group had a dorsal spot - a sure way to sex the fish.... Is this correct or not?

I don't think celidochilus belongs to a group yet, but I believe Felipe said it should go with the missioneira group. Hopefully he will correct me if I am mistaken.

Thx. Ed ~ I think Felipe has said that celidochilus shouldn't be in the Lacustris group, and is possibly a new group. If not, probably Missioneria rather than Lacustris.

My comment about female dorsal ocelli was a generalization directed towards Lacustris group traits. Am still very curious why some celidos (even males?) have a dorsal spot, but not all.... Must be some kind of dormant genetic marker not always present in a species. Would be an interesting research project.

Yes, very interesting....both females and males (juveniles) can show the dorsal spot.
I did not counted how many juveniles with spot and how many with out I had collected....but the relation must be something like 3-7 or even 2-8.
Most of the babies/juveniles I have at home right now dont have dorsal spot.
I am going to the "land of celidos" next monday....and I promise to count!
