Looks good but fatten her up peanut

Mike at H2O Custom Aquatics. He's a seller here on MFK. He had these two fish (his only two lents) up for sale for several months before Jer bought them. I thought about buying them but they were both males.

Nice looking Lenticulata. I would be thinking male as well.

How big is it Peanut? Has it ben eating for you?

The first pic shows a white submarginal dorsal line, it's just faint. The fish is in "less then prime" conditions, which could explain the muscle striations and lack of defined dorsal coloring.

How big is it? Do you believe this to be a "true" lenticulata(looks like it to me)?

I believe it is at least one of the variants of the 'true' lenticulatas. Its still not quite as nice as the Rio Negro ones, but still a nice variant.

The reason I say that I am still leaning towards it being a female is that it has a pretty good amount of pink in the dorsal, as well as some faint whitish coloring. I really need to get a shot of the dorsal. The OTHER reason is he sent me pictures of the other pike that appears to be male. It is the same variant, but is lacking the pink/whitish color in the dorsal, which leads me to believe it is male.

When I got these two I thought that one of them had pink in the dorsal, the other did not. Was really hard to tell from the pictures. Upon getting them they both had the pink in the dorsals, which make me believe they were both females. The other one that I didn't get is lacking this in the dorsal, and is the same size. So deductively you would assume that one to be male.

As the fish age and mature they go through several phases where the male's dorsal changes color. Mine has gone from orange with dark spots to pale pink to almost white and is back at pink again.

The female on the other hand, while going through a lot of the same color changes has had a very distinct, white band. Even at a very young age. It was noticable at just 6".

There is no doubting that the above fish has a white sub-marginal band on the dorsal.

In addition I have a very knowledgable friend that viewed these fish in person while they were still at Mike's and he verified that both were male. This is why I passed on them.

It's kind of a moot point because there is only the one fish left. For what it's worth, I might know where you can get a female. Not cheap but verified as a female. Seeing as how this race is so difficult to find the $250 price tag may be worth it. Let me know if you're interested.

I stand corrected...haha. You know as good as anyone else that I will want that female!!!! That goes without saying. Crenicichla deserve nothing less than being kept as a pair. They just don't look their best unless they are a pair. At least thats my personal preference. Besides, might be able to talk Don into doing a group order with me!! I mean since I'm going to be GIVING him my other snook....LoL

Hopefully I'll be able to turn this one around. Getting some live blackworms tomorrow hopefully, as well as some other live foods. So far it isn't touching anything I drop in. Going on two weeks now without eating. Not good.

Group order. I am included and haven't even been asked yet!:) HaHa Supposed to have something going on with Nate in a week or two, but if that doesn't happen I might just be in.

Maybe that Lent needs some feeders if you haven't tried them yet. Maybe she is related to my Trombeta. HaHa That Trom is thorn in my arse. Only thing she still eats are gut loaded feeders. Oh well I still treasure her.

It would be nice to find someone who likes to keep the same fish willing to do a group order!! LoL!! Not required though....

Yes sir, I believe I will have to start getting more feeders. The acutes and the snooks pretty much knock them down as soon as they hit the water though. OY!! At least there is a Bass Pro Shop only 20 min from me!! :D Yay!!! I think they have feeders of all sorts there...:)

I have found that if I buy a large amount of feeders they pound down what they can in about 5 minutes and then just sit and pick them off as they see fit. I try and buy the feeders 100 at a time. This usually lasts 2-3 days in my tank and that's with 2 Cichla & 2 pikes. 100 small comets will set you back anywhere from $10 to $12. Worth every penny if it means saving the pike!!
