Crested Gecko DIET

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can buy a 200 mL jar of Rapashey CGD for like $12 bucks at any reptile show and it will easily last you a year for one crested gecko. Mine get fed a mixture of that mango baby food 2-3 times a week. I also feed them dusted roaches and crickets twice a week. Some cresteds like insects more than others. My adult male is not too keen on them but both my females are bottomless pits when it comes to live insects.

I figured I'd do mainly the processed stuff, and once a week maybe a few small crickets or maybe 2 or 3 waxworms. Is that okay, Chief Vicious? :D

I don't mind being corrected, I mind being talked down on. No need to apologize, Ozz and Joe.

Kearth-

Just got back from Petland. They had never heard of any Crested Gecko diet :)

But I will buy it at the expo, and then online when I run out. Thanks (almost) everyone!!

You want the phone number I called and the name of the person I talked to?

Anyway moving on.

I am not in any way talking down to you. It irritates me when people buy stuff and don't or won't take care of it properly. In your first post you flat out said prepared CGD was not an option. That equals not taking care of the animal properly which turns into another my animal is sick or dead thread.

I may not sugar coat things as some other people and if you take offense I do apologize but researching something for more than a day is normally a good thing. And when people tell you that they way you are doing it is incorrect there is no need to get all defensive. after 5 years of keeping frogs I am still learning daily. After 6 months of keeping crested I am learning daily.

I have to agree with kearth...
And no matter what you keep you will always be learning.. there is no such thing as an expert in our fields because no single person knows absolutely everything there is to know about a family, genus or even species.

I have had crested geckos for almost 2 years now and where fed solely on CGD for their entire lives until roughly 8 months ago. I acquired them as sub adults from a breeder who feeds CGD alone and I continued on that diet most of them time I have had them and to this day it is their main staple. I only have my male now (female was given to a friend where she still eats only CGD) and he gets CGD every 3 days. Whenever we happen to have fresh fruits in the house i will cut them up and give him a small dish of those...usually once every other month or so. He goes crazy for banana.... And whenever I decide i want to spend $4 on a jar of wax worms he will get a couple of those. This is very rare because I know... out of a jar of 50 wax worms.... he will only eat about 20 before they all die off....
Baby food and apple sauce are entirely not necessary and more likely to do more harm that good

side note: You cannot trust the people at most pet stores...especially pet land.... Most of them are ignorant and don't even know what is going on around them in their own place of work.... I know this because I work at a pet store.. currently petco, thankfully most of my coworkers are competent....most..... not all...... and I have worked at petland... where I was fired because I would take the time to educate the customers instead of selling them whatever their hearts desired regardless of whether they were actually able to care for it or not!

Different Petlands have different stuff. The one by me, for example, has Guppies, GTF, Anoles, the usual stuff. Another Petland 45 minutes away has Motoros, Ctenopoma, Malasian Garter Snakes, Beardies, and Tokays. They're all different.

I can understand someone getting pissed off at someone for buying an animal without doing research. But I am buying the animal AFTER doing research. And the reason I thought processed food was out of the question, I am used to strictly insect eating Lizards that burn through food like toilet paper, not using the same bag of food for 8 months. I didn't know I could buy a bag at the expo and get the next one half a year from now. Just sayin'.
