Crested geckos!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going to have to call you on that, since there are LOT of care sheets... not to mention BREEDERS and KEEPERS that keep them without UV.

And, you might as well use the full name of the disorder if you are going to address it.

They are nocturnal by nature so therefore they don't need UV rays to survive. They do however need plenty of calcium in their diets which is easy to provide in the form of calcium powder added to their food.

they get medabolic without uv do your research and youll see

MTD (i believe its called) is caused by lack of calcium, which can be avoided by calcium dusting crickets before feeding.

It's Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). :p

I mix calcium + D3 (both are combined in liquid form from the pharmacy) with the baby food. Although, the CGD (Crested Gecko Diet) you can buy from the petstore will have everything they need... I just prefer to use baby food since I can control what they eat.

yes if you give enough calcium its fine but uv can also be used to help it so why not use it most people dont give there animals the right amount of calcium so i always recomend uv to help with there lack of proper diet that way what they lack in calcium the uv takes care of i work a my lps and you wouldnt believe the thing i see

Petstores are generally not good to begin with, and so are the people that buy from them. Nothing wrong with petstores, but they seem to be a magnet for idiots that blame a dietary problem on lack of UV... I had a well-reputable store owner and reptile breeder that told me blue-tongued skinks need UV... when most of the problems with BTS is related to the dog-food diet. In case of the cresties, either the people don't give them enough calcium, or their phosphate ratio is too high.

Plus, why use UV when you don't need it? UV lights have been known to cause eye problems and the occasional UV burns. If the animal doesn't need it, then why compound health problems? If the people don't give enough calcium or don't have a good calcium-phosphate ratio, then the lizard will get MBD with or without UV light.

Only a few lizards out a vast many species actually need UV... and most of them that do need it, if not all, are diurnal non-fossorial herbivorous which include Bearded Dragons. Skinks don't count since they are generally fossorial or insectivorous. :p
