I don't currently use any chem. I'm with you that's it's not something you NEED as long as you do your WCs. but I wasn't sure for rays if it was a must. and not I'm glad it's not lol. A drip system is out of the question simply b/c the location of the tank will be in the dining room and I don't feel like setting up a nice looking drip system if I'm not planning on staying in this house for long. a drip system is a long term goal. but not a goal on this tank. sadly.

one good 50% water change a week should keep that tank perfect ;) if you want do too.... your prospective bio load doesnt warrent it though just keep everything real simple and you will be set..

that all sounds good, you probabally kno your gonna need a wider tank it the future.

Yeah I know that. I can get whatever size I realy want right now but I no longer want tanks in the basement so I'm going with a 24" wide tank now till I move and then I will get/build something much bigger. But yes I did know that. However from what I've read a 220 will do fine for at least 5 years. depending on what size I get the rays.

2 footer good for 5 years? Don't think I'd agree with that, but if you feed very lil you might be able to get it to last that long. I think 2 would be more acurate, but to each his own....

2-3 years maybe more... it all depends on alot of factors... you will need a upgrade but deal with that when the time comes...

Sounds like you got everything under control. My only interjection would be the use of a UV running through an FX5. The rate of flow going through an FX5 is extremely fast. My understanding is that a UV (of course depending on the kind you get) needs a slower rate of flow to be the most effective and efficient. I've got mine running through a power head, as it enables the contact of the water to the uv light to last a little longer...giving the uv the best chance to do its job. Others may disagree but I found this to be effective. Just my two cents.

Good luck. I am in 100% agreement with Nic's "K.I.S.S." method. Just keep it simple.

2 fx5's do not seem like much for a 220. I have 2 pumps on my 210 1 that is 750 gallons per hour and one that is 2350 gallons per hour, with friction loss i am sill around 2700 gph. I still feel as if i need more. 2 fx5's will only give you around 1000 gph. Not much turn over IMO. You will see lots of poop!

I also would agree you to get about 2-3 years out of a 2' wide tank, as my female motoro is about 2.5 years old and i feel she has outgrown my 2' wide tank. My male on the other hand could go another couple of years before he gets too big.

For tankmates, armatus!, atf??? gar are great! maybe ST??

You will have issues if you get too big of eaters as it will be ahrd to get food down tot he rays!

2 set ups here follow me....

1 500 gallon pond 4 rays true 1200 gallon a hour pump.... no problems on turnover water always clear and params perfect....

2. 600 gallon pond with true 1800ghp 6 rays number 7 might be back in... water perfect...

you dont need rediculous turn over rates ;) key is in the bio media...

are you also running some strong powerheads? I just do not like to see poop, the more flow the more the mechanical filteration eats it up.

You just saying lots of bio media is what makes the difference?

I had asked about growth rates and got no reply so I figured a 8" disk would take awhile to get to 18-20" before I HAD to have a new tank. 2-3 years isn't an issue 5 was an uneducated guess b/c I didn't get a reply when asking about growth rates. Or I just didn't see it.

tru. 2-3 years is ok for an upgrade I can do it now but I would have to put the tank downstairs and I don't want to have another down there.

Attaching it to a powerhead is not a bad idea I would like to see pics of how you've done this.

I'm still thinking of adding two koralia powerheads to add flow. but that can be added any time. filtration is more my worry b/c the bio load. I'm allways looking for smaller armatus. :naughty: for the right price Hopefully I can get ahold of some this year. if not I'll keep looking but you have the right idea for tankmates. lol GATF will be one WAY down the road b/c the growth rate is sooo slow. STs are just so hard to come by at a reasonable price shipped. I don't think I would want a gar. Unless it's a gator and that's to big long term. but great ideas either way.
