I was walking around in the woods by my house and stumbled upon a breeding ball of cotton mouths. At least it looked like a they were breeding.

That's cool but if your were hiking in PA like your profile says it wasn't Cottonmouths. The farthest north they range on the East Coast is south east Virginia. Were you near water? Could have been Northern Water Snakes. Possibly you saw some Copperheads.
