Anyone else think it is cruel to put 15 adult discus in a 40g tank? I tried to buy the fish only but he wouldn't sell them separate from the system.

You should see most reputable breeders breeding tanks. With discus they do fine in small tanks, as they can't burn nearly as many calories when they freak out. If he is keeping his water changes up, then his fish are healthy. Based on the shape of the discus, he is doing everything right. This system is probably growing better looking, healthier discus than most people that keep discus in a 1 per 10 gallon setting. The key is keeping water parameters in check, and feeding with high quality food.

The fish don't look to stunted considering the tank, I've seen folks with more stunted discus in much bigger tanks. Guy must have been real good with the water changes, or they came from another tank??

the way i see it, he prob just placed them in their. since he is moving and selling a bunch of stuff, the bigger tank prob got sold first and he is placing those discus in the 40 by default???? i dunnoe...but def prob something alittle bigger and the fish looks fine btw IMO

:iagree:

There was an article in TFH and the breeder was using 5 gallon tanks to breed full grown discus. This was just last year ;)

Rather unlikely, as most large tank discus will not attain as large of a size as those kept in smaller tanks. Two major reasons for this. First, as all discus owners know, they freak out, larger tanks give them more room to run, and thus burn more calories. Smaller tanks help to avoid this. Next reason, larger tank means more work, meaning most people will slack the larger tanks on water changes, and as discus need such pristine water, smaller tanks are often the choice of breeders and importers.

wow so you just made me think if i should use my 40 instead of my 70 for growing out....umm intresting. and ive read somewhere that taller tanks promotes fish growing vertically, giving the "hi-fin" look of the discus fish. i wonder if that is true

Haha. You know me..i like to stir the pot. Anyways, it is more cruel that he won't sell the fish separate from the system! It is anyone's guess about his water change schedule but if he is making frequent changes, why is the water level so low in the tank? I hope it is a day's worth of evaporation:)
