crushed coral?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok done! crushed up a fairly large clam shell and stuck it right into the filter

if i had a media bag laying around, i would stuff it and stick it somewhere in the corner, but I don't have that option. I figure if i stick it in the filteer, it will contact more water anyway

Sounds like a plan to me. I'm about to start raising the pH on my Fiance's GSP, so let us know how it works out for you.

well i gotta tell you that my PH is 7.6 from the tap. my water is already hard and high ph, i just wanted to add the buffer to maintain it at that instead of having it swing. I also don't have a high range ph kit, but i'm fine with keeping the ph at 7.6. will let you know if it works for me though

it could be, but thats fine with me. its a cichlid tank, so they should be fine even if it is above 8. I know the tap water is around 7.6 for a fact, and i doubt the shells would buffer the ph much higher above 8

The problem is coral is slow disolving and if you do large water changes you will not have enough buffer in solution.

I would not bother putting them in the filter thats valuable space for purigen or filter floss. I would spread it among the substrate.

The coral will bring the ph up to around 8 to 8.2 then when you do a water change your adding a bunch of lower ph water and if you don't have enough buffer in solution your ph will flucuate stressing the fish. Believe me if your water is hard they will do fine in alower ph the only reason you would want to buffer is if you planned on not doing a lot of water changes and wanted to prevent a ph crash. My fronts breed in 7.2
