Obviously planted tank is ideal, but is it a must? Would larger leopard centopoma be ok in a tank with just a few pieces of drift wood? Always wanted to get some, but held off because I did not want to stress them out in my semi-bare tank.

I keep mine in a bare bottom tank with no decor. Should be fine. They adjust fast and will swin around with other fish

I have my 2 Cteno's in with some fake driftwood and they do fine they just hide under the decor or on the side of it.
