Hey Everybody,

Completed finally the upgrade of the filtration system for my aquapond. Added the additional boxes of bioballs + filter mats. Installed an airpump to increase surface agitation. Added extra submersible pumps for extra circulation....<sigh> ... though the third pump can not be used because it seems to pump out more water out of the sump than can be gravity fed... oh well, standby pump. Added spot lights (no pictures of that but soon - btw the black lights have been removed)

The biofilter consists of khang khong vegetatble (morning glory?). Works pretty well, it is growing like a weed, so i assume it has been drawing the nutrients out of the water. Will add more to the second box.

Finally moved two arapaimas from indoor aquarium - was quite a heartbreaking exercise. Lots of lost scales on the first one - splashed water. The second one was done cleanly... i think i know for sure how to do it. Needless to say, paimas did not want to move out (this will probably cause a succession war between remaining jar and silver aro ... with bichir and two ray pups in the middle). Initially i had a separators for the pair of new paimas but after comparing them to RTCs and gars they did not measure-up too badly.

In addition, the contractor for the works has also given me an albino oscar (quite a cute one).... which surprisingly was not slaughtered of hand by the resident beasts. Very curious little fish that takes pellets quite readily. Pacus were not so lucky for some reason (three dead so far) got two living in the sump...

For previous photos please refer to

The current stock in the aquapond is:

- 2 x RTCs
- 3 x Aligator Gars
- 3 x Arapaimas
- 2 Oscars
- no feeders = all small fish are gone now - arapaima eaten everything off

Hmmmmm, it is starting to look crowded, but luckily these are the stock that i have been planning ... told the aquarium shops that if there is interest in grown gars i could part with one or two (not three ^^)

Thanx for your kind comment. As i already mentioned, the plant is khang khong (morning glory). Ipomoea aquatica, known as water spinach, water morning-glory, water convolvulus, Ong-Choy, Kang-kung, or swamp cabbage, is popularly used as a green vegetable especially in East and Southeast Asian cuisines. Very good stir-fry ^^

Thats a hell of a pond, wow!

I reckon those oscars may become lunch soon though.

:headbang2all that remains is to keep the glass scrubbing for that excellent look. I cleaned one side (it takes couple of hours), but i forgot that taking photos from the long side does not work ... the window where the photos are better had too much algae cos of light exposure ... the water is clear though

The big oscar has been around when RTCs and gars were puny ... i was a bit concerned for the smaller albino but so far so good :naughty:

I'm pretty sure it couldn't get much more MONSTER than this!

You have a kingdom there!

Thanx :naughty: oh how i regret not making a 3x3 instead of 3x2m hmmmm actually should have done 6x3 (with a column in the middle) ...hindsight is great - next project is a pond like my neighbors ...

PS: my set-up is still fairly small and simple compared to some of the truely huge and high-tech set-ups that i have seen on MFK

this is among one of the best tanks ive seen here on mfk!
very awesome!

thanx ^^ for your kind words. i am waiting for color bloom in the tank now that i have two more paimas ...should be more orange and red splashes in the tank... the albino O has also helped to put some color into the set-up. RTC is gaining more and more red too on the front fins

I am feeding them all shrimp (minus head) to try to boost color ... had to keep quiet about it though (if my father finds out that i feed shrimp to my fish i will be in trouble i think).

Expensive :ROFL:my father is complaining that it costs more to feed my fishes than a person ^^ though he does not pay for any of the food - i buy all, still he does consider it wasteful ...
