Cuban cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, I'll find out! I've got 5 juveniles (2-3" according to the website) due to arrive tomorrow from Imperial Tropicals. I'm well prepared to keep just one solo male in a tank if I find it works out that way, I have a very long history of keeping large aggressive CA cichlids in solo tanks so it's par for the course for me :) Thanks for the input.

I agree they will pair up at that size. Im sure you'll be fine. Not much different than a red devil in temperament. They just get the attitude at a smaller size.

Okay good to know, I'll definitely keep a close eye on them. They'll be housed together hopefully for the duration of QT, and then at that point I can see about permanent housing situations. Certainly don't plan to keep all 5, just like to grab a group especially when ordering online since I don't get to see them in person, and then pick a favourite one or two to keep.

Where are you located. I usually have a few breeding projects going, but I don't ship.

A little to far to meet in the middle, also I've heard they frown on transporting fish across the boarder.

It's a process, one I've never handled myself. The cubans are coming from Imperial Tropicals though, and they're way over in Florida (I'm on the west coast).

Well, so much for THAT plan. Order arrived today - the platinum angels and the marbled convicts are all doing well, but all cubans were long dead in the bags. Knew there was a problem the instant I broke the seal on the box, it STANK something fierce.

It was the angelfish that spurred the order, but once I'd decided on the cubans I was pretty excited about them. I checked my usual supplier who is much closer to me and they actually happened to have some, so as a knee-jerk reaction I ordered some replacements through them. They'll be here on Monday. But given I wasn't trying to bulk out an order for crazy shipping costs across the boarder, I decided to play it safe and just order two - I can keep them safe by keeping them separate right from the start. I'll let them grow out and either pick one to keep, or if I love them both I'll make plans for two more solo tanks.

Bummed about the 5 DOA today though!
