Me and my father will be makeing the tanks ( we built our 360 gallon about a year ago, was also our first attempt. And no leaks or problems as to date ). This time though we actully have the correct equipment and gives us some time to spend together. 2$ a gallon isent bad at all imho.

I also agree about the 180gallon.

Theres always room in the next house for my 480gallon right :).

Thanks for helping me decide everyone.

now i am confused......are those tank prices your cost to build or built for you.....

Those are what it will cost for me to build them, which I plan on doing. I'm not trying to sell them in this thread just asking which would be a better deal. For some one else to make them the prices would be fu*ken way overpriced than what u see there, try around 1,400$-2,000$ for the 480gallon ( probably what glass cages would charge)

I thought you were building custom tanks????? why not build it your self

The acrylic is 1/2" thick ( which is good for the 24" height ). It will have extra braces around the edges though because if I do get it. It will have a canopy and a nice stand.

and, I'm not exactly trying to breed with this bigger tank :). If anything it becomes a show tank. and my 360 becomes a breeding tank.

i think you will find the 480 need .75 inch thick not .5 as well as the 70x24 per cyro.com

see cyro.com tech center for thickness

how did you calculate the required thicknesses ????

ps for instance atm is:
480 96 x 48 x 24 x 3/4" $2424 note its 3/4 not 1/2

but the 180 is 1/2
180
72 x 24 x 24 x 1/2" 1216

I've been told by multiple people that the thickness of acrylic depends really on how tall the tank is. Not saying that a 900gallon tank thats 24" hi will be fine with .5 acrylic. But I dont see why .5 wouldent be ok with a 8x4x2?

sorry multiple people are wrong it depends on:

1) height
2) length
3) if the top is open or closed ( supported)....

see cyro website..........register and go tech center and try the aquarium thickness calculator its all free.

the reason it wont be safe is that the load will exceed the allowable stress in the material !!!!!

While the tensile strength of the ACRYLITE GP sheet is 10,000 psi at room temperature, continuously imposed loads below that could cause stress crazing and/or failure. Therefore, 750 psi is the design stress used for water applications.

i dont know if this link works without logging in

Hmm, If it helps any we will have 2 small openings at the top ( we plan to use acrylic cement, and another form of cement like silicone on every inch of this tank ).
But I will go check that link now thanks.

yes thats considered a closed top. it helps alot.

acrylic cement actually melts the two pieces together...when applied correctly the joint strength will approach the material strength....:)
