In The Little Town Of Bedrock!
Hey everyone! So I've got high hopes to be building a 72"x18"x18" (101 gallons) and I'm just thinking ahead for the baby on the stocking. I was thinking maybe a Jag as the center piece and something else so it isn't just a one fish tank ( I tend to get bored of those fast and end up over stocking to fill the space :D ) So whats your opinion? What would you put in this tank?

Thanks!

Why go through the hassle of building when a 125 has the same footprint and is only a couple of inches taller? As for a tankmate I'd go with a texas

I can't have a tank that big on the second floor of our house or my parents would flip! haha The more I think about it though, if I were to buy a 125 I could just fill it to the 18" mark and build a canopy to cover the extra how ever many inchs of empty tank. This would also mean I have a 125 gallon tank for the future :D

I was actually thinking a Tex would be nice looking but how well would it fair against a Jag? Could he stand up for himself?

I have never kept either but it seems that a lot of people keep the 2 together

Large SA and CA cichlids are the best centerpeice fish, period...If you want to add anymore to it, try a breeding project with the centerpeice of choice............

While I do want the Jag to be the center piece I do want a little more in a 6' tank. What about a large tetra or something? Like maybe Disk Tetra (Myleus schomburgkii) or some Silver Dollars with a Red hook or two? Would they be able to withstand the harassment from the Jag? I think a shoal of those would look pretty nice. What are some other fairly large fish that would be alright with a Jag? Please don't say Tinfoil Barbs, even if the tank is large enough they are ugly as sin in my book haha

Yes just get the 125..:D You can just make your own canopy. It's very easy to make. I think it will be cheaper if you do this instead of the custom tank.

I don't know about jags so can't help you much in there buddy, but isn't 100G just enough for 1 jag alone? don't put a tex though, it's very a attractive cichlid and will take the viewers attention from the centerpiece fish.

A proper centerpiece setup would be just one large piece that draws attention and many smaller fishes that will fill up empty spaces but doesn't draw much attention. It is very stressful for the eye if it cannot focus it's attention to one object. So my suggestion would be 1 jag and a bunch of low profile schooling fishes. I don't know what schooling fish can live with a jag though. maybe some fast swimming, medium sized ones like giant danio, rosy barbs, silver dollars? Not sure on these. Let's wait for the jag experts and see..

I'm pretty sure the only reason why a 100g is just enough for one Jag is because of the footprint so thats why people recommend 125 gallons, I could be wrong though.

Thats what I was thinking as well, I think a shoal of 4 or 5 Silver Dollars would look really nice with a big'ole tank cruising in the background! :D

Also turns out Disk Tetras are a no go, they get to be over 13"s!

Yes that's going to look really amazing! Most of my tanks are set up that way, one cichlid and some schooling fish. They are not big'ole tanks like the jag though just some small cichlids.
