cyano or carpintis?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all the input. I'm hoping the majority is correct, I find it hard to argue with those of you that have kept both kinds. Can anyone tell me when they begin showing more color?

cyanos def have the advantage in my book more exotic looking

Its a toss up for me. They are easier to keep since you don't need a heated tank.

so nobody has actually mentioned ANY way of telling them apart. Is this because you dont know?

No, Id be willing to bet its because this topic has been discussed/debated 100+ times on MFK and, with a little effort on your part, the search feature located to the left can help you find the answer to your question, or at least give you the physical feature info of each species so you can form your own opinion as to what it is.

tjw.08, I would say Cyano. I have a Carpintas "Laguna Chairel" and he looks quite a bit different in color and markings than yours.

It is mostly the coloration and size. Cyanos have ver small spots, and get bigger. Cyanos have very small spots. Cyanos are mostly found in Northern Mexico and Southern Texas. They can tolorate cooler temps down to the 60s. They are the only cichlid that can w/ stand those temps.
Hope that helps.

UPDATE!!!

The lfs had three more of them and i bought them all. I kinda think they are carpinte "Lahillis". I didn't get pics of all four but there is two light and two dark, I'm hoping for a pair to breed out of them. I'm also in the process of getting some Vontihellos from Ira. I don't care where he gets them they look AWSOME!!! Comments and advice are welcome and appreciated. Thanks
