So guys, thanks for all your help so far. Just did another water test and my ammonia has reduced to .25. I suspect that by the end of the weekend it should be at 0. What should happen next in the cycle process? What should I look for now? Nitrite levels? I have only been testing my ammonia level so far.
You want 0 ammonia 0 Nitrites and 20 or less nitrates ( between 5-15ppm is ideal imho) once your amm/nitrites are 0 you should test your nitrates every week when you do a 25%min WC your nitrate levels will give you a good base-line as you stock your tank how much your tank can hold successfully and also guide you as to what your min water change routine should be ( more bio-load more WC's in general) as a general rule you can't do to many water changes.. but you can over-clean your filters. theys houdln't be gunked up or blockd.. but your should rarely if ever need ot "clean" them
I cycled my 55 with some danios..I changed water every day until cycle was complete. Amonia or nitrite at any level is dangerous to fish. Ive never had luck instant cycling, but others have. Remember to go slow once cycle is done, your good bacteria can only handle the bioload of what you have in there..the single convict. Add too much, you could start the fun cycle process all over again :-D
