Cycling A Freshwater Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok no problem, thanks. So is this stock ok?

2x Snakeskin Discus
6x Sterbai Cory Cats
1x Gold Nugget Pleco
3x Angelicus Botia (Is thier any other safe botia's? These guy's are pretty pricey)

Can I add anything else? Also will they thrive in a water temp of let's say 83 degrees?

You could do a school of tetras. Something like rummynose or cardinals would be perfect. Any stocking suggestions assume you do enough water changes (keep nitrate concentration under 20ppm before a water change).

OK thanks guys again, I'm gonna look up on tetras, yoyo loaches, and such.

I've been through te list on liveaquaria and hate how most cool fish are out of stock...

Anyone know any other site's that sell quality fish and quality customer service?

Oh yeah, water changes will be no problem I'm planning on a weekly or bi-weekly 20-30% water change..and the same amount for my saltwater tank :) unless you are talken about during the cycling phase...

Last but not least, do you guy's get annoyed when I separate a thought by a giant space? Lol curious because when I think of a new though...I just separate. If that's annoying just tell me :)

also dont' add all the fish together at once. you may get ammonia spikes that will screw up the water stability.

Always aim for 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and below 20ppm for nitrates. I would also add the smaller fish first, wait a couple of weeks and then add the loaches next since they're pretty hardy. After that, when you got the core temp and water parameters stable, then add the discus because they're the most delicate and maybe the most expensive.

A guy I know just lost all of his discus stock due to improper cycling, so be careful and good luck w/everything.

Thanks guys for all the help! So far it's day 2..also reptileguy I'm cycling with the rotten food (Sorry I acidentaly skiped that post you wrote) hope it goes well, I'll purchase some extra Bacteria at my lfs (Don't know if it works) however I'll still be doing the 2-4 week cycling. Also I will do 30% waterchanges (I forgot that it's fresh so no mixing with salt :) )

Here is the updated stock list:

2x Snakeskin Discus (Last to be placed into tank)
6x Sterbai Cory Cats (Can't wait to have these little guys!)
1x Gold Nugget Pleco (Hope these guys are hardy)
3x Angelicus Botia (Found good pricing on thatpetplace)
6x Cardinal Tetras (First to be placed in tank)

Temp Problem:

On liveaquaria say's the sterbai's temp is up to 77, Gold Nugget 79 and the tetra's 81. Any recommendations or added tips? Also I guess this is a good stock list? Should I add or remove anything?...

Thanks A Million Reptileguy, Tylo, BigO, Spirit and Gruntking! I appreciate it

for your temp, I recommend going with 80F; it's the core temp on all my fish tanks, and I def dont' have any problems with fish going sick or coming down with ick. It seem to be a medium temp for all your fish, and I noticed my fish becoming sluggish when my temp drop below 77F usually after a water change.

You should probably go with 82-84, discus really need higher temperatures and are the most fragile fish you will be keeping.

I have had my loaches in 86 degree water while treating for ich for a week without problems.
