Cycling question *help a newbie out =) *

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've used fish food, egg yolks, and scallops to fishless cycle my tanks. all you need is a source of ammonia and anything that decays will produce ammonia, shrimp are a favorite because they will produce a lot of ammonia and decay quickly(and you can eat the ones you don't use for dinner) you can even piss in your tank. the pure ammonia you found is a PITA to get and you're right, you're only going to use a tiny amount but it is useful in larger tanks(over 100g) or to create a large, sustained ammonia spike. i've seen a few guys will add pure ammonia daily to keep the levels at 8ppm until the levels drop down to less than 2ppm in 24hrs(huge amount of BB at work there)

that would be kinda aquwred if someone walked in.

maybe you could just pee in a jug or somthing in the bathroom then pour it in
and it would take a ladder for most on here to do it straight into the tank or some sweet aiming skills (look out for the carpet)

actually, i believe there was a guy got caught by his wife on a chair in front of his his brandnew tank with his pants down.

OMG F ME!! i knew i should of done a fishless cycle... i just spoted my firemouth rubbing himself off the gravel and rocks, no white spots has been spoted yet and my ammonia just spiked! what should i do... i dont wanna treat the tank cause if i do it will kill all my BB. Then again ic ant be certain its ich yet, he isnt breathing heavy as of right now or have a lost in appite but he is rubbing himself off the gravel and rocks every 10 mins or so.

Ich is like my worst nightmare.... please help me =(
should i wait until my fish has white spots to determine if he has ich? i have a head ache now ( had a bad experience with ich in the past)
im having a hard enuff time dealing with the tank cycling i dont want to have another head ache of ICH.

i just added some salt into the tank, it should help right?

Probably reacting to the ammonia/nitrite in the water.

Do a big (50%) water change NOW...

It may slow down the cycling somewhat, but it should keep your fish alive. Cut down on the feeding too, less food = less ammonia.

Ich you can worry about tomorrow, if it happens, but ammonia and nitrite will kill fish fast.

firemouths are not the best cycling fish, should have gone for zebra danios. Bump up the tank temperature to 87F for 2 weeks and the ich should be gone. Be patient during cycling. It is normally the worst part for new fish keepers
