Cycling Tank w/ Prized Cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when i set up my 125g i used a xp3 from my 55g and established filter media from other filters in my fx5. i tossed in my 5 juvenile psittacus the first day i set it up. they were all great and still growing

I got a 55gal and set it up just filled it with water and let it sit I didnt even have filter cartridages for it. The very next day my friend calls me asking me if I wanted his step dads breeding pair of EBJD I was like heck ya but can you wait atleast a few days for my new tank to cycle I dont have anywere for them he said its either get them today or my step dad is throwing them in the garbage. I took some water out of my smaller tanks and put it in and hoped for the best. I went and got the JDs and they had a ton of fry with them which is why he needed them gone they were in a tiny tank and all tore up pretty bad. I brought them home added salt and melafix to the tank put them in and so far 2 weeks later they are still alive. This is not something I would reccomend trying to do but thankfully its working so far.

We just moved all of our fish and tanks around in the house, and simply slapped cycled filters on uncycled tanks. Seems to work OK.

Though, if this isn't an option get some filter media and a couple handfuls of gravel from a cycled tank, and have some Amquel on hand. Keep notes on how much you put in.

Just got an update from my buddy...

He did a 25% water change about 3 days (added prime to new water) and added some Tetra SafeStart to the tank and has been adding Seachem Stability for the last 2 days....He indicated to me that his ammonia and nitrite levels still haven't changed and are stuck at 1ppm...Nitrate <20ppm...

Any other ideas? I told him to continue w/ Stability but personally I'm not familiar with that product....I just hear from majority that it works. Should I tell him to add some Amquel or more Prime to his whole tank?

Just wanted to ask...do you guys recommend another partial water change or leave the tank alone and continue to treat w/ stability and prime?

ya i put my red devil in her new tank without cycling at all. there were only a few rocks that i used from my old tank and some of the water.fish has been in the tank for over 1 month now no problems

If im not mistaken the Seachem is a chlorine remover. Same as Prime.. Not 100% on this but.

Nitrates at 20ppm will not harm fish. 50ppm of it will. Have him go to a local fish store to buy a few hand fulls of gravel from one of their established tanks. Tell him to put it into the filter cartridges (if filter is equipted with) if not just put it into the tank.

Or if he can have him buy a sponge filter, trade the new sponge for an established one with the fish store and set that up. It will cycle his tank properly in approx 48 hrs.

Definitely will let him know...thanks.

Yea the Nitrates @ ~20ppm is fine....It's the Ammonia and Nitrite @ ~1ppm that I would worry about and the fact that it hasn't dropped in a couple of days already!

Should I recommend him to do a partial water change?

Not if he can get the dirty from an established tank. If he cannot then yes. Make sure he adds the ammonia remover stuff.

when you add prime it converts ammonia to non toxic form but will still read on your test kit. I wouldnt add just prime to the water daily, I would add it with the waterchanges. Approx 25% daily at first then every other day after a week or so. If he is using stability he can do less waterchanges, just follow the directions on the bottle, but I would still do one after the week cycle. waterchanges may remove the spores in stability. watch for heavy breating, gasping at surface, that is a sign a water change needs to be done asap.
