Set up a 33 gallon tank over the weekend .. It's been running since saturday. On all my tanks in the past I've done a fishless cycle once I actually learned how to cycle However for different circumstances I decided to use fish for this cycle.

Yesterday I purchased 10 comet goldfish to cycle the tank but am now finding information on the net showing how cycling with goldfish is a bad idea. Looking for help on this topic (if goldfish are infact bad to use for cycle). I've also never cycled with fish so any information on that would be great, I'm assuming they will do the work for me I just keep up with feeding and water changes..

Few reasons I chose goldfish:

1 - The heater for my tank is still being shipped, so had to put a cold water fish in there for now.

2 - My girlfriend bought a small tank for her room and wants a goldfish to put in there so I'm just giving 1 or 2 of them to her when the cycle is done.

Also the place I bought them offers a (I believe) 14 day return policy "for any reason" with fish. So I planned to just bring the goldfish back in a couple of weeks when the cycle is complete and purchase my actual fish then.

seeme like you're just manioulating your LFS by returning the dead ones...

X2 also, Comets can get 12" an adult wouldn't even be able to live in the 33..

ok .. none of this has anything to do with my post. for one I'm a college student on a budget and petsmart is a pretty big chain .. I think they will handle their own by taking the goldfish back for the 41 cents each .. I could just kill the goldfish but I'd rather bring them back to at least give them a chance .. Also, I don't get the 12" part of your statement? Goldfish are just being used to cycle my tank? goldfish are not what I'm stocking ..

Anyway, back on topic .. about the cycling?

probably .. but thats not my question.. anyone about the cycling of my tank?
Its hard to give you a response considering i'm distracted by your statement of keeping a 12" Comet in a tank smaller than a 33 ..

okay then .. pretend you didn't see it if you want. I don't know what to tell you but if you wanna comment then comment about the cycling process which was the point of my topic.
I know goldfish can get to 12" .. I know how big of a tank they need to live to grow that size and be healthy, Your not informing me of anything new but the information I do need to know about is what I posted the topic about .. read the title.

i don't see the point in cycling with a comets from petsmart because they probably have an internal or external disease, and they produce a lot of ammonia .. So really, I think it'd be safer to return the comets now before they infect your tank, and just do a fishless 2 week cycle.
