Cycling with goldfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow, this thread filed up over night .. alright for one to settle the tank water stuff, I do not currently have another running set-up .. I sold my 225 over christmas sadly :( this is my way of getting at least a little bit back in the hobby was to get a 33 gal (biggest I can get at the moment). So don't have anything established to move.

this is one of the main sources I got my information from that led me to the goldfish conclusion:

http://www.firsttankguide.net/nogoldfish.php

I should have posted that link sooner but couldn't find it again and had wiped my history.

Also, I get the cycling process yes, my cycling question was relative to using fish ..
ie. how frequent water changes
how frequent feeding
how much to feed (if its different then normal feeding)
anything extra I should be adding to the water
anything I should be doing other then then the above, testing and letting the fish do their own thing.

Also, I realize how large goldfish get, My girlfriend bought a 20 gallon tank. The way I see it, If I give her two of these 3" goldfish with a properly cycled tank, filtration and proper care (by me) in her 20 gallon, she will be happy (which we all want .. cause is she isn't, then i'm not!). As well, I'm fairly confident the goldfish will enjoy their life more in that 20 gallon for however long they are in there than then being stuck in an unflitered, un cared for fish bowl in someones room or used as a feeder (which between the 2 are where 80% of the goldfish from that store go as I was informed by the associate).

Get your GFsome Gouramis, they are cheap, and are good for a 20.

Goldfish are NOT. No matter how you look at it, the fish will keep growing, which means those fish CAN reach 12+" in that tank. And it does happen.

I have a 15" goldfish with a smashed in tank because he was being kept in a 30 gallon with a turtle.. he was trying to kill himself.

Why torture a living thing just so your GF doesn't throw a fit she can't have a fish? Just go get her something that will work in the 20.

A goldfish of 3" should have a 30 gallon... to itself.

just had to do it lol

I Think you might as well kick yourself in the NUTS on this Thread. Do what you want with the gold fish. If you are using them to cycle the tank it will work you can buy some bacteria it does help also. You might lose a couple of fish when the tank starts to cycle do water changes and make sure you are over filtered.

Get some live sand, and 2 hours later add some fish!!! Thats how I cycle all my tanks with zero deaths!!!!!

We are talking about freshwater setup here -_-''

And no, even if we are talking about saltwater you are doing it wrong. Live sand would provide ammonia when things in it are broken down. You will still have to undergo the whole nitrogen cycle. And I don't believe 2 hours is enough for a complete cycle...

Get some stability so the fish dont die. I doubt the tank will be cycled in 14 days so honestly you should donate them back to the lfs for USING them. Asking for 41 cents back is beggar-mode. I cycle with fish but then again i got bacteria from a running setup. I heard stability wOrks wonders and im waiting for mine to get here
