That's not a swamp darter (or if it is it has odd pattern and shape) and not all darters stay that small. Quite a few get to 5" and very thick.
 
Logperch, for example. Redline darters get pretty big and thick, and look good too.
 
I meant most "standard" darters. Logperch exhibit some really neat behaviors, though I have no idea whether they'll do the same in an aquarium since I've only observed them while snorkeling. I had one following me around one day because I was turning over rocks for him.
They kind of reminded me of yoyo loaches.
 
Still many more than "logperches" get big. Many of the percina's and quite a few of the etheostoma darters can get nearly 5" and chunky too.
 
5" IS a few inches to me. I guess my perception is skewed. lol.
 
i have seen darters get about 6 inches before.

Darters remind me of loaches as well.

They're interesting little fish. Hang on to it awhile, you may find you like it. Even if it isen't "monster".
 
its in my pond, i see him every now and then swimming witht he goldfish.
