I agree 100%. Maybe go with a 180 or even 220. That way it's at least semi mobile for you after big things in your life such as college. I say do the 500 gallon when u can have it at your own place later in life and enjoy the fish everyday.

I agree 100% bass and rays would look so much nicer not to offend you but imo bass are way more fun to keep than oscars

So instead of adding an educated and experienced opinion on the subject, you insult people (read:me) when they're trying to explain the potential cost of such a large project. Let's hear your take Mr. High and Mighty.

Wow, now that sounds like to pot calling the kettle black.
I don't know or care which users were throwing out 500 -600 dollar electric bills for a 500 and I'm not going to go back to find out but I have a 500 gallon 8X3X3 and I can tell you first hand it doens't cost anywhere near that per month to heat and keep the pumps running.
It's not cheap to set up and maintain by any means but let's try to be realistic.
I did not say the utilities cost $500-$600 a month but during winter season my tank runs in the $300 range per month just on energy costs. I'm running about 2000 watts @ $0.097 per kwh during winter. Summer and warmer seasons my tank runs about $130 per month. Idk where ppl get the idea saying it costs $500 per month to run...Also take note my tank is set up in the garage but insulated. Also the OP was planning to build it in his basement and I assume it's unfinished cuz no parent would let u build such a large tank in a nicely finished basement. If a flood happens that's huge money on damages.

My 300 gallon runs about $65 electric bill a month in the winter. Havn't hit summer yet but right now it runs about $50.

Would this stock work at all? Not sure on the dovii as I'm pretty sure I can't even get any near me. Would the cichlids parts work though? Name any faults please? I know it will be an extremely aggressive tank. That's what I want though.. Also gonna probably load in like 1000 of my breeding snails. I'm pretty sure the convicts don't stand a chance. I wanted to get Texas and jags to crossbreed. So id maybe just get one of each. Any ideas on stock?
