The way i see it is, this is the practice in a lot of Asian countries... they all want the freshest of the fresh when it comes to seafood, and the Japanese are probably the pickiest about having the absolute freshest due to the amount of raw fish they consume...
I mean in the west, geese are force fed food to make their livers as fat as possible for Foie Gras, Chickens are given hormones to help them grow faster, while male chicks (normally less than a day old) are tossed into meat grinders pretty much right when they are born... so is this practice wrong any more un-ethical or worst than what others are doing, i guess it will depend on what culture your from how you will see and interpret it...
Every one is different, and we all enjoy eating different things, some are common across the world, others not so much, so can't really say any one practice is worst than the other, since it all comes down to what is acceptable within that culture...
