Most of the messages here are not really answering the question whether they think the fish is a Datnioides. It seems to me it is but I have never known that it is a suitable fish for sushi.

We've ironed that out already, they're rockfish from the genus Sebastes.

The way i see it is, this is the practice in a lot of Asian countries... they all want the freshest of the fresh when it comes to seafood, and the Japanese are probably the pickiest about having the absolute freshest due to the amount of raw fish they consume...

I mean in the west, geese are force fed food to make their livers as fat as possible for Foie Gras, Chickens are given hormones to help them grow faster, while male chicks (normally less than a day old) are tossed into meat grinders pretty much right when they are born... so is this practice wrong any more un-ethical or worst than what others are doing, i guess it will depend on what culture your from how you will see and interpret it...

Every one is different, and we all enjoy eating different things, some are common across the world, others not so much, so can't really say any one practice is worst than the other, since it all comes down to what is acceptable within that culture...

Imo it comes down to one simple fact. We in the western hemisphere don't watch videos of cows being slaughtered or chickens being crushed. If this is the culture there, that's fine but why must you put it on tape for public viewing?

Don't forget that this is a global site where cultures mix. The contents of this video could very well be socially acceptable to the poster of this video's culture, as you yourself just said.

I understand that. It just bothers me that some people are trying to defend it by comparing it to american sports. Cutting a fish in half, relates in no way to a professional wrestler or a hockey player lol. If it is your culture, just say whether or not you agree with the practice and move on. Don't try and justify it with people who don't believe in it.

Well, i should point out, in a way as cruel as this video is, just recently i saw another cooking show from i think China, where the chefs were given the challenge of cooking a fish in the quickest way possible...

So one chef, after preparing the sauce (i presume before hand) literally took a live grouper by its head, and wrapped it in a napkin to grasp it better before placing a few cuts down either side of the fish and deep frying its body...

Right after the fish body was cooked it was plated with the sauce and the towel removed from the head and served to the judges, at which point the camera zooms in and you see the fish is still opening and closing its mouth while on the plate...

Then again, i've become desensitized to these things since i live in Asia, and had a few dishes many would consider cruel treatment...

There's the crux of the issue though; people will always try to defend their beliefs and make others understand it. This is why political threads and gun threads aren't allowed here. We are a fishkeeping community and in order to maintain the friendly air and positive interaction, we disallow conversation on subjects of great polarity. If we can't talk about religion, guns or politics, how can we be at each other's throats about them?

I've been watching this thread for a while now, I only popped in because it's getting very close to going away. :)

Let's play nice guys.

Umm a lobster is alive in boliling water. Have you ever watched it? I boil crawfish alive and it takes about 30 seconds for them to stop moving. I have watched pigs slaughtered by both electric and bleeding out. They do scream while bleeding out.

Rockfish or "Mebaru" in japanese is on the sushi / sashimi menu. Here are some examples similar to a datnoid. There are many types out there. Just haven't been able to find a black and white striped Sebastes yet.
