Datnoid Care sticky

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say no light or very dim light in their early days in your accomodation. Also, have minimal sand and few hiding places to keep them out and about. Being around the tank a lot will get them used to the idea of you. Some sort of low light plant like java moss to keep the water nitrates low and to provide cover. I am still debating on whether to sell my GT and get all dats or to keep him and divide the tank with a couple dats on the smaller divided side

I consider very important a care sticky for dats, but even more important is who is putting it together. Alot of people here are trying to come across as experts with very little or no experience....I've noticed over the last few months some pretty screwy advices .
Personally, since my early days of dat ownership, I got most of my knowledge from what was posted by Ivan (alfon76) on the AP site...from the "stability " issue, to breaking off live food, to aggression within a dat community , all that info is
extremely well written and explained.
I find hard to believe that someone else can match that level of expertise and I wonder if Neo or someone can convince Ivan to repost it on this site as well.

I got an NTT as an anniversary gift from my GF, its about 6 inches, still getting used to its new home and has barely eaten at all, I think they take a while to get comfortable. Any specific advice on NTTs would be great though.

dat care ?? i just filled my tank up with little ones over a year ago , kept the water quality good by monitoring it regulary and regular water changes , i have never had a prob healthwise with my dats , they have gone from 1 inch and are now ranging from 5 to 9 inch , i fed them massivore delight for first 6 months , then standard floating pellets or sinking pellets for a change ,i have a small light at one end of the tank , and no hiding places , just a bit of sand area with a bit of slate and a small bit of wood,
i feed every other day to keep them eager and most will hand feed , even jump out of the water to take a frozen from my hand lol,
i am glad i decided to keep dats , i think success with dats is more about how much time you spend with them , mine seem to have a certain bond/recognition with me that they will not show anyone else ,
i am glad i decided to stock dats , advise for anyone thinking of getting them ??? i would say ''nothing to be scared about, just keep the water good and dont feed to often , also with regard to the stable/unstable subject, i would say dont worry about it , just get yourself some dats ''
you know that non agressive oscar you would love to own ,, ??

Am I not glad to found this tread, and thanks for posting this comments, its actually the sort of answer I'm after since its so hard to get people opinions on dats.
Just over 2 weeks ago I bought a 1" dat, I think its a Ntt, I was looking for their grow rate on the forum but didnt find that much on that size, now that you posted, it has given me some thoughts about it. I was wandering if I could see some noticeable growth from my dat since it so small. I currently feed him live food and bloodworms.
The other things I was wandering whether I could add one more dat in my 40g tank along with 2 juvi sens in it?
I hope to find some more info on dat,
cheers
