Datnoid Scratching????

It could be gill flukes or it could be bacterial gill disease. If you follow the directions while dosing for prazi which is large water change followed by treatment and then another large water change you should solve the problem. Prazi will get rid of any parasites and if its bacterial the water changes should get the bacteria straightened out. If it persists look at treating for bacterial gill disease.

What Prazi by? What company? And how come Pima or Mela Wont work? Are you guy fairly sure he has something? I do 50% WC everyweek

Prazi pro is a liquid parasite medication. It is added directly to the aquarium in the proper amount.Look it up,it is said to handle both types of parasites....Pima and Mela are very mild medications that mainly are used for certain disease symptoms and healing wounds and fin damage...The rubbing that you are describing your dat to be doing is indicative of some type of discomfort or irritation.

Im having same issue with my 5" NTT. He still eats. Still active. Looks healthy and no signs of any bacteria infection on skin.

I dont want to medicated my tank if o dont visibly see any thing wrong. Maybe add some salt

Are you keeping any other fish with them? Mine were doing the same thing. Then I realize ich was the culprit when my clown loaches started getting the white spots. No white spots appeared on my dats, but they have stopped scratching themselves constantly once the ich breakout was over. They still scratch themselves, but once in a while and I heard that was normal.

The reason you are having the same problem is because it's normal for tigers to flick sometimes they do it a lot sometimes they won't do it at all

My big ST has flicked every now and the for 10 years that's a long time for a tiger to have ick for don't you think

My advice would be don't treat for ick until you see it

I'm shocked that all the long term tiger keepers didn't point this out before they jumped in with meds

Sometimes when you feed the fish, instead of swallowing it whole, they chew on it and very tiny pieces break off and float around in the tank. When those pieces stick onto the body or nostrils, then the fish will flick.

Dats are not supposed to flick. Something is wrong. I believe ammonia burn to the gills may be a result. Also when I fed shrimp only when I first got into dats, I believe the malnutrition may have led to this as well.

What is normal is a light scratch here n there. It's usually a slow glide and turn into an object. Just grazing the side of the body somewhere. May do it once or return for a few more light scratches. Always chalked this up to growing itches maybe. Completely harmless and leaves no scars. May not see it again for weeks. All dats seem to do it

Flicking to me is the harsh continuous rubbing on an unsmooth object by the eye and head area. It's a much quicker motion than the normal glide and itch that i've observed. Mine loved to flick constantly on my filter intakes and sometimes driftwood. This gave a couple eye issues as a result. If he does this on a frequent almost all day basis, there's either a diet or water quality issue ime

Agreed, Dats will occasionally flash, but repeatedly doing it points to a problem ... the 3 IT's i have now are the healthiest Dats i've ever kept, growing quickly all over 12 inches in less than 3 years, and i never see them flash, whereas the dats i kept in my earlier fish keeping days werent eating pellets, not growing fast, and were flashing much much more probably due to my lack of experience/nutrition/water quality/not enough current
