hi all

i have always wanted to keep dats. i am setting up a 50USG tank soon and was going to put a shoal of about 8 silver dollars, a dehlzi bichir, a rainbow snakehead and a SA/CA cichlid of some description (thinking a Texas), when i thought how about Dats?

so i would half the SD shoal (making it 4) and add some Dats. Would this work? would 4 Dats be O.K together? do Dats need to shoal? i would like a small dat that will live happily in freshwater, any species that you could reccomend?

i would like to state that I WILL NOT KEEP THESE FISH TO ADULTHOOD IN THE 50USG TANK.

thanks
Matt

I dont know much about rainbow snakeheads but if the dats are small they stand a good chance of getting eaten. How big are you planning to get them? and dats dont really "shoal" there more of a loner predatory fish. I dont think the cichlid would work either again the dats stand a chance of getting eaten since dats dont grow very fast. Basically it depends on the sizes of all the fish if it works or not.

Any species of dat will work. But i would recomend a indonesian datnoide since they are pretty hardy and are a good "starter" datnoide. 4 dats would be fine together.

Dats grow small, so your aggressive eaters, may eventually outgrow the dats in size, and eat them..

Id get placid tankmates for dats, and Id DEF GET DATS!

thanks

a rainbow snakehead grows to about 20cm max and does not have the same repuataion as its cousins!! a Texas cichlid is quite peacefull i think so whould not cause many problems. most of the fish, excluding the silver dollars max out at about 20cm so the dat would be the biggest in the tank!!

if dats are "lone predidtory fish" do they leave each other alone? will they fight if kept in a group? would one Dat be O.K on its own? are they active or do they swim slowly and gracefully as the rest of my tank mates do not swim very fast so would like that to be a theme in the tank, making it relaxing to watch.

sorry to be a pain with all the questions
Matt

if dats are "lone predidtory fish" do they leave each other alone? NOt always, sometimes you can get a rogue Dat that kicks the others asses, ive heard of NGT being the rogue dat far more times than any other specieswill they fight if kept in a group? SOmetimes, NOt typically that bad, but it depends on the mood of the fish, sometimes u just get a mean fish.would one Dat be O.K on its own?YES are they active or do they swim slowly and gracefully? They can be both, mine are not as active as other peoples on here...

Ask a million more i dont care

Welcome to the datnoid craze, once u get one, u wont stop GUARENTEED!
They have prolly the one of the best personalitys out of soo many fish.

lol thanks

the shop i would be buying from has a website of what fish they stcok. However i cant seem to find any indo Dats would thinbar Dats be O.K, or "four barred tiger fish" they are the cheapest Dats going. Dont get me wrong i would'nt mind spending that much on a fish but as its my first i dont want to spend £100.

what would be best, a single Dat or a shoal? i cant decide which i would prefer!! i was thinking, if i got the Dat first and grew him on, would he turn on any new tank mates?

thanks

They generally swim around slowly or hide. They aren't ziping atound the tank constantly.

1 Dat can do great by itself. You either want 1 or as many as you can, as they will fight a bit with each other.

You said you will be upgrading, how soon? The Dats grow slowly as said above but I don't know about the other fish you are also adding, and Dats require great water conditions., and it sounds like your tank will have a big bioload.

what would be best, a single Dat or a shoal?I like shoals...They will teach each other to accept new foods, when one tries sumthin new, most likely the others will get jealous and try it too! i cant decide which i would prefer!! i was thinking, if i got the Dat first and grew him on, would he turn on any new tank mates? They grow sooooo slow, you have no idea...And unless it fits in his mouth, he wouldnt turn on the fish.

thanks

Get a few Dats, see how they go, and go from there...

Feed em frozen market shrimp, krill, bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms...STAY AWAY FROM FEEDER FISH!

i have no intentions of feeding him feeder fish GOOD

here is a picture of the Dat you said sounded like an Indo YES ITS INDO

http://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk/stores_productsinfo.asp?store=54&prod=509

are there any foods you would reccomend for "bulking him up"? I feed mine nightcrawlers and earthworms, bloodworms... and one of my dats loves tetracrisps!
would a group mean the Dats are more active or does it not change their activity levels? You just dont want aggressive tankmates or your small dats will hide, when they are small they are timid, when they are big, they dont care, and they will just do what they want.

thanks
Matt

Id just worry about the snakehead eating them, and the texas beating them up.
