I once kept a group of 4 spotted with my dats for months fine but id avoid texas and go for geophagines or rams thats what ive got with mine,

I agree, Geophagus would work well, but alot of people disagree too!

MY dat wasnt good colored in this pic. but my geo was!

are there any foods you would reccomend for "bulking him up"?

Best way is regular water changes and varied diet. My Dats are eating

Krill
Silver Sides
Market Shrimp
Blood Worms
Brine Shrimp
Mysis Shrimp
Shrimp Pellets

Thanks for the pictures

i think i will go for a thinbar, they are cheaper and i prefer their appearence. Are they hardy enough for a begginer? do they need brackish water? i am still not sure over quantity of Dats.

However I am at a loss with tank mates. i will keep the Silver dollars and the dehlzi bichir but am not sure about the cichlids or the snakehead. Any ideas about tank mates?I could do scrap the cichlids and have the bichir, the Dollars and the snakehead (possibly) and 1 Dat? i would do an all Dat tank but don't have enough ££ to pay for it:(. Could i add in the cichlids when the Dats bigger?

Thanks
Matt

Thin bars are the least hardy of the Dat species. Many die for no good reason. You can give it a try, my first dat was a Thin Bar and its still alive years later. They are fresh water.

You could try adding the Cichlids when the Dats are bigger, assuming you have a few years to kill, and have a bigger tank by then.

Your starting to put me off Dats!!

Would Indo's be a better choice? i was told by the shop i would be buying them from they are perfect for begginers. why are the not very hardy? would sevrums have any problems with Dats?

Thanks
