Datnoid's stability mystery

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
all 5 of my IT 6-14" were stable when my AT 11" was still alive. he was a huge bully chasing all other dats around most of the time. now that he's gone my IT are only stable when feeding and randomly stable/flashing back and forth.

my ngt 6" was unstable when he was with datnoids smaller then him, now that he's with the 5 large IT he's 90% stable. unstable when im watching him. his bars go pale but have a blue tint to them pretty cool looking tho

my IT growouts less then 3in were almost stable all the time

This may not relate to the topic too much but I would think IT and ST have similar lives and habits in the wild. Not the same but similar. Why is it that ST seem to be stable considerably more than IT if stability is potentially a bad thing? I guess what I'm getting at is why don't we ask why ST are usually so stable in addition to IT being unstable at least in captivity, what is a possible key difference?

@gage 5they are different species even though they look alike and to me that alone can explain it, also, i have never seen any footage of wild ITs in their natural habitat (would appreciate links to any such videos) so I dont know if they would also flash or unstable in the wild just like in captivity

I'm aware they are different species, I'm saying even though this is the case, there must be some similarities in behavior and that could possibly help provide answers to the IT stability "mystery." Sometimes asking indirect questions is the best way to come to a conclusion. If I learned anything about science in HS that would probably be it.

Is it maybe caz most ST are older now so maybe the older they r, the more stable?

My IT is only stable when they fight with one another

Any mod can sticky this debate so people can share their theory. Maybe we can come to a conclusion one day to the mystery

also i dunno if this is true but a really experienced fish keeper once told me he remembers all ITs tend to be stable 10 - 15 years ago that they used to look just like a ST but with more bars, i cannot attest to this coz i wasnt keeping dats back then, wonder if any long time dat keepers have any thoughts about this; his theory from there is that the current younger ITs somehow contain bad genes due to contaminated wild stock, pollution, etc making them prone to unstability
