Deadeye’s Red Wolf Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My fault for not updating here enough - I always tell myself I will and then months pass before I do.
Speaking of updates…

How’s the wolf doing? When my red wolf passed it was a solid 12” and made my 65B look small when it decided it wanted to be active. Yours seems to still be growing.

Still doing great! He’s sitting at 9-10 inches now, almost as wide as the thinnest part of the tank (11 inches). Almost 2 months ago now I vacuumed out most of the mule that layered the bottom and I think he’s still mad about it (he used to hide inside it). I’m sure his appetite is still good enough to eat any pleco or cat I want to try, so it looks like I’m still the only one putting a dent in the algae.
The Aqueon Quietflow that I had been running for years started to run not so quietly (despite my best efforts to clean and replace broken parts), so I got an Aquaclear 50 and I love it. Much quieter and seemingly more efficient (it actually fits media instead of just cartridges).

Is that one of those 36 gallon bow fronts? I see PF has the red wolfs can they live in a 55?
It is - at his current size he’s definitely making the tank look small, I just don’t have the room to upgrade him (and if I moved him into my 75 or 125 it would be a bloodbath).
One could definitely go in a 55, but a wider tank would be better. They aren’t terribly active, but room to turn around is always a benefit. The bow has the 15 inch middle that makes up for the thinner sides.

Thank you for the info

I had a large bn male pleco with my wolf for awhile but it had to hide under a large log otherwise the red wolf would go after it. Too big to eat, but it still an issue because it was in the wolf’s tank.

Your wolf is showing a lot of yellow colors, my last one was pretty dull colored but was always fun due to the personality. My new one seems like it may have a little more color than the last and being that I got this at a smaller size seems a lot more interactive too.

Thanks for the update Deadeye Deadeye , fish is looking great!

Was not expecting to make this post. I am devastated to report the death of the red wolf. He clocked in at about 9 inches (maybe more if he had a tail - more on that later).
Life had been getting busy and I hadn’t been spending as much time with the tank and it was showing. Best guess is I cleaned too much too quickly and shocked the fish to death.
Over the last year and a half I had noticed his pectoral fins looking very stubby but didn’t think much of it. Recently the other fins had started to do the same - though not consistent with fin rot best I could tell. I was never really sure what the cause was (and kept forgetting to make a thread about it), so it’s certainly possible he had been unhealthy for a bit.

Final thoughts:
Easily one of the best monster fish that money can buy - probably the best one on a budget and with a smaller tank. If I did it again, I’d definitely up the water changes (I neglected the fact that this fish in a 36 is like trying to cram an Oscar into a 55.
The 36 is definitely a good tank size for the fish as far as swimming room goes, but once it grows I do think an upgrade to a 40B or even a 75 would be ideal. They don’t do much but he made the tank look small. I also hate the footprint of the 36 bow front (but I don’t like any tall tank) for most fish anyway.

I’m not too sure what I’m going to do with the tank now. Part of me wants to try again since it’s one of my favorite species but I also wouldn’t mind trying something new (S. sanchezi?). I’m open to any suggestions, either solo monster or a community setup.

So sorry to read this! After I lost mine due to jumping, I have followed along with yours whenever you posted. Outstanding species, I agree. Maybe your tank wasn't huge, but I think you are over-reacting when you compare it to keeping an Oscar in a 55.

It's funny how a lot of people show pics of wolves in general and Reds in particular, and some tattering is often visible, mostly in the tail but other fins as well. When I had mine this kind of damage would show up from time to time in the tail and I always assumed it had to do with the concrete pipe sections in his tank being perhaps too rough-edged and abrasive. The damage would gradually disappear and heal, and then, weeks later and without warning, would re-appear. It really bugged me.

Hopefully you get another one.
