After the loss of the red wolf I knew I wanted to do another monster, so this one seemed like a good choice.
Got a Serrasalmus sanchezi, he he’s about 3 inches and already a good eater. The teeth are already huge - not looking to get bit anytime soon.
So far he took some salmon and may have gotten a small crayfish I tossed in with him. Currently he’s residing in the 36, that should be good for life or it will be at least a few years until he outgrows the tank. Maybe I’ll try to get a bn pleco in there if the ones I have ever decide to breed…

He’s not as interactive as the red wolf (so far), but that’s to be expected with a piranha.
Shoutout to Global Fish Co. for a beautiful fish!

I gotta feeling the sanchezi may become a glass banger 😆

Looking good mate. Do they keep the polka dots into adulthood? Presumably the red gets more coverage as well. Very nice looking piranha 🤩
They color similar to red bellies. It should lose the spots and get a deeper red. There’s also supposedly a purple variant but from what I’ve read it’s unless if it’s a true variant or if they all get like that with maturity. There aren’t too many good quality photos of adults out there that I’ve seen.
Not my pic, but the adult will look similar to this:

He’s a great looking fish! I don’t know anything about that genus so my question is, are there different species that work as a solo wet pet as opposed to a shoal? For example most people typically keep nattereri in shoals.
Generally the pygocentrus genus (nattereri, caribe, piraya, ternetzi) all are shoalers and can even shoal together. Imo they do well as a solo though since other Ps are as liable to kill each other as they are to shoal.
Pretty much all of the serrasalmus are solo fish. Rhoms/black piranha is the most well known and arguably one the most impressive solo fish you can get. Spilos have been kept in groups but even then there aren’t great results. Any of the serras may associate with each other but spend most of their time alone. Sanchezi have been observed following nattereri in the wild to scavenge off their kills, and I’m sure other serras may as wel. No serra has been bred in captivity to my knowledge - they kill each other first.
