Death by Pellet Expansion?!?!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not from expansion. But I did have a smallish Oscar choke to death.
I think he had so many pellets in his throat that it put pressure on and stopped his heart.
Just a theory. I did not do an autopsy.

lol i always presoak my pellets :D mainly because of my blood parrot because of his mouth he finds it hard to suck up the little pellets whereas if they are soaked they sink and he can get them easy.

also there are smaller cichlids in the tank so they can easy rip the little balls apart ..:D

I notice that a lot with my africas which I have to watch for bloat with them as they get a lot of veggie matter. I started feeding them more types of pellet though but they just seem to inhale it especially my venustus and then a minute later she is huge!

i think its a real issue for some fish.
the owner of 'the aquarium' in culver city always presoaked and he has kept fish is whole life 60+

also the brand of pellet must also matter as they all have different ingredients and processed differently,,,,,,,,, also floating and sinking will be different.

i will speak to cory lo from hikari and see what he knows.

Some fish GULP air while grabbing pellets which can result in problems, but the actual exspansion of pellets in the stomach of fish, if a problem would lead me to beleive feeding less or feeding slower to give them a chance to realize they are full. Eyes are bigger than stomach syndrome.

only death problem i have ever heard about was krill being the primary ingrediant of pellets and it causing liver problems...

I've never heard of krill causing liver problems in fish. What's the source of that claim? I'm not saying you're wrong but krill is the main ingredient in a lot of my pellets (New Life Spectrum) so I am curious.

monitor your fish when they eat and only feed a few pellets at a time.
