Death by Pellet Expansion?!?!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some fish don't seem to know when to stop eating. And is it instinct for some to keep trying to eat the same thing when it's in their field of vision, even if they just spit it out? Bite-spit, bite-spit, bite-spit....finally after several tries, (fish--->) "oh I guess I don't like it". LOL.

LOL

My oscars used to gorge themselves on pellets. One day, one of them sat on the bottom and wouldn't move, his stomach laden with pellets. I thought he would die, since he was gasping so hard. I bumped up the temp, and two days later he was fine. i think is is a definite risk though.

What do you think is the gulper's limit? :D

I always simply throw pellets into my growout tanks. The fish then eat them up really fast before the pellets ever have time to absorb water and expand. Minutes later thier bellys are HUGE!

I was wondering if anybody ever heard of or experienced any fish deaths by pellet or food expansion? Anybody presoak their pellets to prevent this?

Were these floating or sinking, Gr8?

Im curious to know the expansion rates between floating and sinking pellets.

Lup - They are floating pellets. I dont understand how people might not think its a potential problem. Imagine swallowing several dried up sponges and then taking a huge drink of water. Sounds very uncomfortable and dangerous IMO.

The pellets I use don't expand when wet. They only soften. What brand and kind of pellets in paticular are you talking about Gr8?

I count the number of pellets I feed my fish. Once I find their limit, they stay at that amount for a while. I gradually increase their feeding as they grow. They would eat themselves to death if I didn't do so.
