Death Roll

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your readings sound good as of last week. Yes, tell your father that I said you needed to do a HUGE waterchange (with Prime or some other dechlorinator, of course) and that it's okay to do such things late at night. Tell him justonemoretank often finds herself inspecting fish and gravel-vaccing pleco poop late at night, and that her husband simply finds her quirky. Definitely get up to your LFS ASAP. Test the water again tomorrow, and the next day, etc., until you know the instructions and colors by heart! Then, you are on your way to becoming a monster fish keeper.

It's not what you said by how you present it.

Honestly, how many people on here have an RTC in a 1000g tank or pond? I am sure the 300 would suffice for a good period of time.

As far as the death roll goes. What he is describing could be anything....could be a parasite of some sort. Maybe it is the water paramaters...with out the specs on that it is impossible to rule out but what he is describing could be gill flukes....or any # of things

Guess what irked me is you telling him he is being irresponsible for thinking about housing a fish like this in a 300

Guess I am the same for having my 7" Silver Aro in a 125 right now!

thanks for all the advice i appreciate the concern. My end goal wasnt the 300 tho i would like to get a pond but thats only in thought and i seen the ply tanks. I am moving in the basement apt so i will have room for these such things and not have to pay rent lol. I know the size of the fish i have read about them and owned fish since i was 13 (22 now) jus never seen the deathroll thng and got me concerned.

I'd rather not argue with you. Your aro is, obviously, fine for now. However, his plans were to house this fish in the 300, which will not work. I stated fact there. I'm going to get kind of deep here. It seems that people today want what they want, when they want it. I see the manifestation of this on MFK. Every day, people want a fish. That fish is pulled from the wild. It is shipped to one's LFS. And then the person that wants it gets it, puts it in a tank that's too small, and watches it get various illnesses, the majority of which are due to the fact that they're not providing for it correctly, and the fish dies. A wasted life. Or, you could THINK about your decision. You could RESEARCH the fish. You could PLAN the appropriate housing. And then you'd most likely watch that catfish live twenty-five years. But the majority of people don't take responsibility for what they do. That's why we're overpopulated. That's why we're in an economic downturn. I'm simply asking him, in a non-sugarcoated way, to think about what he's doing. And if you're not happy with it, then feel free to offer your own opinions. If you don't like the way I give information, then offer your own expert opinion, and let him choose. I have some experience. I give information. That's all.

I'm glad to hear that. Please ask any question you need to over in the indoor pond forum... there are a lot of people who would LOVE to help you plan your monster tank.

i will be soon i honestly as of now havee no idea about how to start a pond but im sure there are plenty of experienced pond ppl in the forum and i was thninking that wouldnt be for about 2 years is that about right though. would a red tail tsn be ok in a 300 for 2 years from now.

PS the only reason i am not jus going straight to the pond is bc i love having a tank next to my bed so i dont plan on having a pond there to have a 2 ft catfish jump on my pillow

Like she said...get the water tested and take it from there. If all the numbers come back good, you would be wise to quarantine till you figure out what is going on. Have a close look at the fish for spots, red gills, a dusty look over the body or gills, anything out of the norm. Keep in mind that some parasites can not be seen without a scraping and a microscope. Rule out bad water first.

Yes, sharing a bed with your fish would put you in a different forum, for sure. I kept my RTC in a 125 until he was sixteen inches. It took about ten months. Then his pond was ready. From what I understand, the growth rates for these guys are similar, so that would give you less than two years. However, definitely search here on MFK, I'm sure the RTCxTSN growth rate question comes up a lot, and it would let you know for sure. What I'm really getting at is it will happen faster than you think, and it's better to plan now. Just start planning, stockpile supplies as you get the money, and go ahead and start building. Because between your silver, your cat, and your oscars, it will happen fast.
