Dechlorinator nah?? or yah???

i did use it all the time, but lately i ran out and i havent been using it (for the last few months) and all the fish are fine.
chlorine apparently evaporates in 24hours which is why u are meant to make the water stand in a bucket or something if u have none.

Good luck with that...Bad advice again though...Months are nothing...WE keep fish for years....

I'm a little disappointed. Why did this have to be such an ego match. It could have been a civil discussion. He never told everyone to quit using dechlor, he just said that he doesn't use it. He apologized for the "scam" post. Instead you all just jump all over him. So what if you don't agree, think independently and don't follow suggestion just because one person has an opinion.

If anyone changes their fish keeping methods based solely on ONE post, AND NO FURTHER RESEARCH WHATSOEVER, then they probably have no business keeping fish, or caring for anything. Whatever happened for factchecking? A sad day for MFK and open debate...

Some things aren’t about opinions… they are about facts…

The fact is some areas do not use chloramines (which do not evaporate)… and only use chlorine (which does evaporate in time)… Therefore people in some areas may not ‘need’ to use dechlorinator… but most do… As most areas use Chloramines…

That is fact, not opinion…

When someone posts false statements we SHOULD call it out to prevent others from being mislead…

people are voting no, although I wish they would chime in and explain why. I am not doing this to be an ***, I just wanted to see people debate the topic because again I think its a scam, although many people use it. I have not used it in years and have not lost a fish in that time (knock on wood). Although that doesn't mean you can all go run and do it now.

Then you get to page two and see this....Three times it has been said to be a scam to this point...We should have read further?

For those of you critizing the OP because he does not know the parameters of your water; Do you know the parameters of your water?

if you live in the US and get municipal water the EPA requires the city to send you info about what is in your water at least once a year. you prob threw it out when it came in the mail.

Dechlor products doses are one size fits all and have a margin of error to cover th worst case.

the water in my area leaves the water treatment plant at 4 ppm chlorine (thats low, our water almost meets drinking water standards before treatment) and is meant to arrive at the furthest point in the system with only a trace amount.

now why would i treat my tank with enough chemicals to dechlor the worst case when I am only getting trace amounts, less than 1 ppb?

how quickly dissolved chlorine can be removed is a function of the surface area of the water exposed to the atmosphere. it takes only a fraction of a second for the chlorine to off gas from water exposed to the air. I fill my with a sprayer which increases the surface area and accelerates the removal of dissolved chlorine.


I change more than 1000 gallons every week and I only use dechlor if i do more than 50% and have to fill it quickly.
dechlor is not necessary for everyone, but it is for some. everyone should figure out their own case, you just might save yourself some $$. I know what my water is treated with, i know how much chlorine is in it when it reaches my faucet.

Fact is that if you dont smell chlorine in your tap water, you certainly do not need the dosage that is instructed on your bottle of dechlor.
