Please help me make this tank more poly fun and friendly......and more pleasant to look at. Not a lot going on right now.

Took out all the potentially sharp objects as you guys advised, but left the two hidey holes. Right now I have an ornate, who is the only fish in the tank. Will be getting an albino senegal and 3 electric blue acaras in the next week. and perhaps one of the other small polys.

The tank is 55 gal. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

( Looking to upgrade to a 150+ gal sometime in 2017. )

The first thing ill change is the substrate, i would go for sand, polys love sand better. Next is the background (lolz) i would go plain black or blue. And last i would have a heater cover cause polys like to hangout next to it. By the way, dows you ornate like to hangout next to the heater, if so the red sore near the belly might be a heater burn.

Add some floating plants that have some long roots. A tall driftwood piece and change the gravel to a smaller gravel or sand. Get rid of background.

How old is that background? Lolz
I was going to comment that it was a bit busy. Maybe just a plain background like black/blue instead. Substrate could be a bit smaller, not a fine sand necessarily but something like the CaribSea Peace River would be nice for the polys. Bright neon decor or plants need to be replaced with fresh, new, realistic plants....

Do whatever you feel like doing really. You can change things out slowly or all at once. Change background & rocks, that hidey hole for ornate, add lighting, add a Dori Nemo figurines, etc...

But if this where my set up. For starters. I would do the following below. Many of these items can be sourced out on Craigslist and online within your budget.

1. Add lighting.
2. Removing hidey hole is optional. Don't think it's necessary. Get to see fish more. Up to u.
3. Add taller fake or real plants. Even cheap floating dwarf lettuce. Your in florida so should be easy finds.
4. Consider adding a canister. Recommend a Rena xp 3 or 4. Cheap find on Craigslist or Amazon. Stay away from marineland C series cuz leaks.
5. Bypass getting Electric Blue acaras. They'll get taken out by ornate.

I think you should try this... lol

HAHAHA probably 10 years LOL. I literally took over my dad's 55 gal that he wasn't taking care of. I'm not a fan of the substrate either or the decorations, except Benny's log cause he likes it lol.

Trying to decide if I completely redo the tank(sounds like I'll need to) or save up and wait and get a big tank. The first might be better just because he's living there right now.
