I've been keeping fish since around 1969. I've had many, many species over the years, fresh and salt. It's never been about "pretty fishes" or other nonsense. It's about the uniqueness, and behavior of the various species. Discus are a very unique species, and can be quite challenging to keep and breed successfully. Behavior and hardiness can sometimes vary with strains. Especially with some of the wild strains. That's part of their charm.

yes discus is very challenging at first. took me a year and nice chunk of change lost to finnally be able to understand them.

I dont think its so much an age demographic as much as a $$ demographic. Lets face it, discus are a spendy endevor by themselvs much less a nice big planted tank to display them in and most younger people dont have that kind of money. Who drives 80,000 dollar sports cars, lives in monster cribs with monster display tanks? Mostly middle aged men right? I dont know very many 20 somthings that well off unless they come from money which brings us back to the middle aged group (mom and dad). Reef keepers shift even more into the middle age category, because they are more expensive.

Discus are some of the most vibrant colored and unique freshwater fish there are. I guess you could call me a big burly man and I do have a tank full of beautiful discus...and a tank full of datnoids, and aros, and rays, (you get the point). Discus just adds to the collection;)...makes for well-roundness:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

...Plus, as long as the discus tank is nice and purty, the wife lets me have my monsters:D

Your signature just made my day. Kimbo slice haha I remember watching Kimbo beatin the piss out of fools in their own backyard like four years ago.

Anyway, I keep discus and I am not by an means big burly.

I've discoved 99% of the population picks fish the same way they pick cars or furniture. If it's pretty, shiny, expensive or has status they want it. I don't think it has anything to do with age or gender. I'm one of the 1% of the population that picks fish, cars and furniture for reasons other than they're "shiny or pretty or expensive" :-)

:WHOA::ROFL:not really my car goes vrmmm vrmm vrmm and it's a lunch box toaster on wheels(2005 scion xb) <--- I picked the car because it was different.. ok ok I picked it because it was the closed thing to a toyota bb I could get. discus I needed a challange after platys mollys, sword tails, silver dollars etc etc. I was looking for color fish, and something that made me have to do more then just feed the fish 3 times a day, and do a water change every 2 weeks.

I'm under 30, female and discus are now my favorite fish (as well as SAE). I've been scheeming for a few months now how to justify getting a large display tank to fill with discus... it's hard while I'm shelling out for an apartment but later I just know I have to...

Yup, I think its a curse I have. After keeping fish for the past 20+ yrs I'm only captured by the most delicate and expensive ones. Uaru, Geos, Discus, Altums, Rays and some of them new rare Plecos. Guess it's the challenge. Why could'nt I like Goldfish? They're just a dime a peice!
