Don't know whats going on with everyone else, but.

I don't believe in a nanny state, however I do feel that most police make the best decisions they can in a given situation.

Other then that there is nothing to talk about. Either you don't trust any cops and he was lying and shot the dog for fun. Or, the dog ran at him and wouldn't back down and shot at him in self defense. You pick which ever you want.

If a criminal attacks a police dog the sentencing is basically the same as if he/she had attacked an officer. why does this not go both ways if the officer shoots or kills a dog it should be attempted murder or 187. that will make any cop think twice. I hate how society these days makes these people into "heroes" and allows them to break the law simply because they have a badge and a gun.

Police dogs get the same respect as police do because they are part of the police force.

Possibly because in society today there are those that devalue a human life down to that of an animal. Criminals who shoot a pursuing police dog are sure to do the same to a pursuing human police officer. Whatever it rakes to get away.

I known a couple of cops in the past who have a brain, then you have those, who were just picked on in high school, who feel they can do whatever the hell they want in society to others.Any cop who shoots any animal for no legit reason,is a scumbag in my book and should be fired for doing something that is ignorant.

Actually it is not the same penalty for attacking a police K9 as it is attacking an officer. And everyone is wasting their breath on this thread. Whats the point in arguing over this??? yes alot of people on here dont like police officers obviously and others support them. No one except the officer will know exactly what was going on and we dont know the details of the incident they were investigating. Believe me the media will intentionally twist the truth to get this sort of reaction, they have done it on calls i have handled as an officer.

it is a shame animals do have to suffer for the consequences of their natural instincts sometimes such as protecting their property, but I would rather my own dog (who is my partner) be killed in order to preserve the well being of a human being. And for all the haters out there, yes there are bad cops out there and I have worked beside them before, but the majority of us are out there to help people and to make your neighborhoods safer for you and your family so that you dont have to worry about it.

And about the SWAT video where the dog gets shot. Yea it sucks but the suspect had not been taken into custody yet. And as a SWAT Operator myself im not going to have a dog biting my ankle while im looking for a suspect in a house. We have children to go home to at the end of the day and being distracted by a biting dog can get you killed. And no matter what breed of dog it is or how nice it is to complete strangers, when they see us coming through the door in full gear they dont know what we are and it scares the hades out of them. So they defend themselves and their families. But we have to protect ourselves too. This isnt meant to cause more arguements but I hope it helps people get into the perspective of an officer who has had to almost kill dogs on more than one occasion (nightly).

I think you bring up good points, and i'm not a cop hater. And i think most people understand the situation is different from your perspective. But the boiling point of this issue, in this situation is that cops are supposed to protect the publics safety and property. I want the police to be able to do their job, but when this happens who is being protected? Why should my dog (or anything else living thats important to me) be sacrificed in order to solve someone else's problem? I suppose its difficult and pointless in this case as little is known about the true details of what happened. But i know if my dog (if i had one) was killed on my property in order to find a missing teenager/abusive spouse that may or may not have been a threat to anyone's safety...i'm not sure what i would make of that situation.

edit*: killed or harmed, i realize the dog survived

...Does a cop stop and think that there is a dog in the yard after supposedly being warned? Anticipate having to use deadly force? Figure out if potentially killing something very important to someone innocent is justified in the specific situation?
