!!!! DESPERATE URGENT HELP WITH MY DOVII !!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
duanes ........ that is exactly what a fish looks like when they have an acute form of Flexibacter columnaris. Quite often the fish is dead before any type of fluffy growth has set in. A common disease in flowerhorns, referred to as "duck lips".

He is still doing fine, very active. He is eating, and doing well.

I had a Grammode display this disease over the Summer. His lips were out one day, no eating, no activity, and in less than a week was dead.

My Dovii has had his lip this way for 2 weeks now, and he is still active. I hope that it is not the before mentioned disease and just some infection he is slowly getting over. No changes since the beginning.

Thank you all for your concerns and help.

wonder if this acute form is a recent phenom, I have never seen it in my tanks in 50 years of fishkeeping. Madness must be safe, my beanii were dead in days after presenting symptoms.

Hey bud, how's it lookin? When you came over the other night and told me about it, and told me you posted the posted the pics on mfk, I decided to come take a gander. Man that looks bad, its great that he's still active though. For anyone who hasent seen this dovii in person, your missing out. This is a truely beautiful dovii, the best looking one I have ever seen in pictures or in person. Pics don't do this guy justice. It would be a really big loss if something were to happen. My best wishes bro, and let me know if there anything I can do.

If it was flexibacter your fish would most likely be dead by now. From everything that you have decribed, including the duration of this problem, the odds are that it is a bacterial infection caused by getting spiked by your pleco. That doesn't mean that you're out of the woods yet, but by the sounds of it your fish is still holding his own. Hopefully he responds to the clean water & antibiotics & recovers soon. Good luck!

Hey madness, been out of the loop for a bit. Sorry to hear about the dovii, need anything let me know.

Update.... I recently had the pleasure of finally meeting the infamous Mel. We talked for almost an hour. He had some basic ideas and great info on the Dovii that may really help. I have also read several articles on the disease. RD the article you posted said use Maracyn, but read another report that stated not to. If I can find it I will post the link. There were so many conflicting ideas in all the articles. So because there were so many conflicting reports on meds, I decided to just go the simple route. Even a couple articles saying to increase temp and several others to lower temp. So I lowered it cause that seems to make since if it is truly Flexibacter.

One thing I did notice was common amongst most articles was to add some Potassium Permanganate to the tank. And that this can be found in the product Oxy Clear from Jungle.

So I removed him from the tank & gave him a long salt bath with 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, with a dose of Furan. I know it was a lot to hit him with at one time. I read and read just about everything on Fexibacter and other mouth and fungus diseases. I researched different meds and the ingredients and which meds work best with what chemicals. Plus, I was running out of options. He stayed in the tub for almost an hour with several air pumps going. Then I completely cleaned all the gravel in his tank, 2 of the 3 filters, added 2 more air stones, and replaced 70% of the water. Lowered the tank temp from 82 to 75. Then added the Potassium Permanganate to the tank, along with salt at 1 TBL /10gal.

Put him back into his tank where he went into the corner and hid. I then added to the tank some herbal meds by Microbe-lift to help with stress, to continue to help with the fungus and to help replace slime coat that was probably compromised in the bath. Then I turned out the lights and completely covered the tank.

This morning I got up uncovered the tank to let him acclimate before turning on the lights. After turning on the lights I noticed that the blister looking thing on his lip was gone, and the roof of his mouth was not swollen, and he is as active and rambunctious as ever. I have not tried to feed him yet. That will be the big test, cause he hasnt really been to aggressive eating for the last week. Barely eating anything. But so far, he is looking better. :headbang2
