It maybe the market prawn that you are using. They have phosphate as preservative. I've seen that happen to one of my friends aro with a strict diet of market prawn. Also the prawn are from the saltwater. I would use something like fresh tilapia fillets. Good Luck.

Yeah but id say he eats more earthworms and ray poop than prawns. But i also considered this. I have some talipia and salmon but to be honest he stopped eating the salmon when he realized the rays were getting live earth worms.

Getting the rays out is in the future. If i had my time back i would of kept him by himself.

You can add some sodium sulphate (epsom salt) to help reduce any inflammation, and see if that helps. Unless you got a bad batch of MP, there shouldn't be any issue with feeding MP or earthworms, but tilapia is good too.

edited to add I just read the true temp of 84.5, very good. :)

yeah I take Brets advice as gospel. What rate of dosage of epsom salts is needed? Store bought epsom is fine?

I appreciate all the help. I have never been attached to a fish like this before. Hes directly in the living room so he has become a big part of the family already. He has been officially named Elmo by my daughter.

RD is right on point!

Add Epsom salt at 0.1% which will be about 550 gram or 37 table spoons to your tank. This will help reduce the inflammation and will act as a mild laxative to help clear him out.

The fish is still eating and shows strong posture in the pictures shown so at this point I don't think you have a lot to worry about. Run the epsom salt for 3 days doing a small water change of 50 gallons daily and replenish to salt as well with 10 tablespoons or 150 grams. After the 3 days continue water changes every couple of days to reduce the salinity.

Things should clear up relatively quickly.

Thanks for the help! I will start him on epsoms tonight afterwork!

Did a 50 gallon change this morning, epsom salts are at home waiting for me to get off work. My gf said its not red anymore his vent is more of a brown color? What does it mean if it has changed from red to brown? This morning i tried to tube feed the rays. Hahah he did not take kindly to it. Rammed the clear tube and kept biting at the worm in the tube. He is so strong he actually managed to knock the worm out of the tube and steal it. He is obv very hungry. WHen should i feed him again? Should i with hold the food still?

Okay im just about to start treatment. I just noticed its red and enlarged again. Is it constipation? Does having movements thru his vent irratate it? SHould i add the water with disolved epsom salts slowly or just add it all at once?
