If your aro is unwell and attacking your rays, you should seriously consider separating them... before you end up with a tank of unwell fishes... At this moment, no one is EXACTLY sure what's wrong with your aro; what if it were some kind of infectious thing?! Better separate ASAP and treat, if you can.--- My 2 cents.

Ive thought of this. But its hard the rays are almost 18 inches long and i have no other larger tanks. Ive been considering a kiddie swimming poool or some sort of outdoor pond. How deep does it need to be?

I would love to treat but im not treating untill i know what it is. I totally suspect its bacterial but i have no hard proof. This is the third day of epsom salts. I also serviced the fx5 today. Testing better than ever. Nitrate is at a lil over ten after 3 days of 50 gallons a day wc. Aro acted normal today and ate.

Does the rays wound look bacterial? I will monitor it and post pics hoping someone will be able to help me

OK Justin, things are looking more serious now.

What are all the tank mates?

What has been in the tank in the last few months ie: feeder fish or un-quarantined fish?

I need to know all the info!

To me the rays looks to have a gram negitive bacteria infection which I would try to treat with Kanamycin as directed.

The arowana vent looks prolasted and he most likely has spironucelus which is best treated with epsom salt infused food. This can be done by mixing 15 grams or one level tablespoon of epsom salt per 500mls of distilled water. Then inject or soak the arowanas food in this mixture. This will take 4-7 days to clear the problem. Spironucelus has also been succesfully treated with Metronidazole aswell.

Best of luck.

Id say 6 to 8 weeks before i got the aro is when i kicked the gar out of the tank. a few weeks before i kicked the gar out i got weak and tossed one of the cudas feeders into the tank for him. I regretted it when it took the gar more than a few mins to catch the feeder. Not that it mattered bc the mistake was already done. The gar has been growing very fast and is perfectly healthy to this day. I dont doubt that there was a bacteria introduced to the tank before the aro arrived. I have had a gut feeling since day one. I was just thinking the laticeps were the canary in the coal mine so to speak. And they are growing so fast and have been in this tank from day one. Im guessing my fanatical wc regime is what kept the bacterial count low enough for the rays to fight it off? But now that the aro is harrasing the one ray he is showing symptoms due to a lowered immune system.? where can i get this med? Im learning a hard lesson here. The money doesnt even bother me bc you gave me such a good deal. My pet is in trouble and it bothers me. Its all I have thought about since i noticed this. In my fish keeping life i have only lost only 2 or 3 fish. I have had hundreds of cichlids at a time and none of them sick. I finally get my dream fish and i get him sick instantly. Im going to buy some distelled water and start soaking his food in the solution. I am also taking tom off work to try and get this antibniotic.

This tank had once housed tang cichlids. It was tore down and sat dry for a week beforew it was set up again. The filter media was all replaced and the fx5 sat dry for a week as well. Than i took the rays out of there tank and added there fluval 405 and sponge filters to the 180. So this tank was seeded with the rays tank. The rays and the gar have been the only fish in this tank. Just the 3 laticeps and the aro have been together. I just hope this is a fixable problem. Bacteria is something that seems hard to control. I havent even had a fish with ich before and now i have one of the harshest fish problems out there.

I even spoke with a vet today about this problem. She is going to talk to some collegues tom. i am also going to talk to the U of A tom if I can find the right department. No distilled water at the sobeys by my house. Just my luck. Is ro water okay? Im goinmg to try some other stores for some distilled

I think that you just hit the nail on the head.

I concur with Bret, use the 3% epsom salt solution on the aros food (to kill any potential hexamita/spironucleus) and begin treating for a potential bacterial infection for ALL fish. The aro at this stage does appear to have a prolapsed rectum, and the epsom salt in the water, and in his food will help resolve that. Kanamycin is sold by Seachem under the name Kanaplex. You can mix it into the food as well.

Try Henry & Nature's Corner, or Big Al's for Kanaplex.

Another alternative is Maracyn and Maracyn2, which will treat both gram positive AND gram negative bacteria, but I believe they also affect the bio bacteria, and the last thing you need right now is a major die off of the "good" bacteria in your filters.

Also, most bacterial problems in fish are gram negative, so for now I would advise keeping things as simple as possible. (use Kanaplex)

The red streaks in your ray appear to be bacterial hemmorrhagic septicemia. (a gram negative bacteria) Your vet isn't going to be able to tell you anything with any real certainty unless he/she takes a culture, puts it under a microscope, & knows what they are looking for.

Thanks Neil and and Bret you guys have been a great help. Im going to do everything i can to fix this. I need to do this while the rays and aros will eat food still. Im all over this tom morn. Calling in to work due to fish sickness, good thing im union. Ive noticed all the blood vessels near the surface on the rays for a long time. I thought it was normal, these are my first rays. Is there a chance this can be cured?

Don't panic yet, the fact that your fish are still eating is a VERY good sign. You should be able to get these fish back to 100%.

I know zero about laticeps, but I have never seen blood vessels showing like that on any other species of stingray.

I tried a pellet soaked in epsom he refused it. He has only ate a few pellets in his life anyway and only when he is really hungry. Im out of worms, but tom morn he will get one injected with solution. I know where to get the seachem meds. Family pets in sherwood park actually has a nice selection of seachem meds. I just wasnt sure what one to get. I will be there as the store opens. With your guys help im hopeful i can beat this.
