Okay my tests are showing trace amounts of ammonia. Less than .25. I am supposed to dose again tonight. Should i do a large wc before i dose to lower the ammonia? Even though the directions do not say to change water?

i think your being over-ocd about clean water. and you might be changing your water faster than your BB is building + causing the temp to spike and drop all the time.

idealy, a weekly water change of only 15 - 25% is sufficient.

Changing the water wont affect the bb in the filters and the sponges. I suspect the antibiotic is killing a lil of the bb

This problem i have is all over the place. I cannot pinpoint it. the tank is barebottom empty so toxic substrate or ornaments are out. No spraying of chemicals in the living room and no smokers in the house. I even have a uv air sterlizing unit in the same room as the tank. Just to rule out bad air. My tap water tests well but i only ever tested the 4 basic parameters. Im not lazy and i enjoy being the mechanical part of my filtration. My tanks have never went more than 4 to 5 days without a wc. Usually a daily tiny one to get the poop out.I try to never put my arms in the tank and when i have to i rinse my arms many times before i even attempt this. Is there a place i can send my water that will analyze it?

I wouldn't worry about your water as long as the 4 parameters stay in check. Why this happened isn't exactly clear, but he seems to be doing fine overall. He's a young fish with a more immature immune system that has recently been introduced to a new tank, so there are a large number of variables here. As long as he is eating and behaving normally, I wouldn't worry too much.

I will stay the course on the treatment plan. SO no wcs till the treatment is over? Sould i extend the treatment for one dose? Bc the first dose had to deal with more epsoms in the water?

You can do WCs at 48 hours past the previous dose, just prior to the next dose.

We can evaluate whether or not to try an additional dose 2 days after the 3rd dose. If he continues to recover, then you can stop the treatment after the 3rd dose.

You can do a WC just before you dose the tank. If ammonia continues to increase, you can dose with Prime every 24 hours to keep ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates down. It is imperative that your water quality remains pristine. Fish do not heal in bad water.

No carbon, fx5 loaded with bio max andscrubbies in the other trays. A fluval 405 stuffed with same media. Two of the largest air driven sponges i could find. These run on a battery backup with the heaters to keep my tank liveable in case of power loss. Gives me about 45 mins with the large pump and the heaters. If it looks like a long outage i can run the sponge filters by themselves for close to two hours. I am the mechanical part of my filtration.

His vent seems the same. Not at its worse but still not perfect. I dosed the 3rd dose last night. I also added a lil extra in there this time. I dosed for a 200 gallon tank on the final dose. He is such a strong fish, I dont doubt he can withstand all of these problems. Its a testament to Brets selection process and his relationship with the strongest farms across the pond. This guys potential is insane and I want it to be reached. Sometimes he looks like bluexb bc he has such a strong blue base.

The aro yawns a lil more than he use to. He doesnt flutter his fins as much but still will sometimes. His posture is strong, and his fins are fully extended most of the time. he is a excellent stingray herder. He likes the stingrays to be on one side of the tank at night and quickly herds them over when the lights are off.

My plan is to think about a 4th dose of med. Not sure what will make my mind up, I dont want to use antibiotics again so Id like to make sure its a complete treatment. Im not sure if there was a bacterial problem but now i can almost rule it out. The male ray has recovered from his wound 100 percent.

The treatment that helped the most i belive was the epsom soaked food. Maybe didnt help the aro the most. But the rays insides seem alot healthier. All poops are tight lil full corkscrews now. No sloppy poops in the tank. I would invite other members to try this method with their rays that have eating or appetite issues. Really cleaned em out!

I bought a 24w uv sterilizer to put on the tank when the treatments are over. Prolly not strong enough for pathogen control, or a long enough exposure time. But at least it will do something positive? After these meds i will consider a parasite treatment if the aro continues to rub his "neck" a few times a day. But i plan on giving him a few weeks of good wcs and good food first. Hopefully this cures all. I tried tilipa today he refused it haha worm junkie. I will starve him off the worms soon when i feel he is healthy. He ate a pellet as well today so thats something. Just gotta get him hungry enough and he has shown a abililty to eat anything.

The Kanamycin was to treat the ray for the bacterial infection. I don't think it will help the arowana with the vent irritation. This I why I suggested the 3% epsom salt infused food as it very affective for treating the symptons you have demonstrated. Keep it simple and don't start using shot gun tactics. Be patient and observe these thing sometimes take several days to improve.

Trying not to update. He Is almost 100 per cent back to normal. Just waiting to post a pic of him fully healed. Vent is as small as its been since this happened. Added some insects to his diet. He is still taking worms, however I'm injecting the worms with NLS slurry now. Trying to get him and the rays on the pellets. I will post a pic when he is ready for his debut, that's not In the health forum!!

Thanks for everyones help. I needed it clearly. I'm looking at a rubbermaid stock tank for the rays. The aro isn't the nicest guy around. He likes to arrange the rays a certain way. I will update with pictures as soon as he finishes healing! Knock on driftwood

wrong. any temp change happening in the tank is getting sucked into the filter and changing the temperature in there just as much. freshly aquired water is much cooler than tank water. the extreme changes of water parameters and drop in temperature alone, cycling through your filter is enough to kill/slow bb production previously existing in the sponges. so you were killing the bb double-time with antibiotic + temperature spikes from massive amounts of cool fresh water.

i know the thread is old, but for your future reference. glad to know ur arrow is healthy.
