In the caiman den
Anybody know anything about these? I saw them on kingsnake.com and they claim to be smaller than any of the 2 breeds that go into them. Very beautiful!! But they cost a bit more than the cuvier's that i originally planned on getting. So any info on these would be great!!

You've got plenty plenty of space in that monster enclosure lol, might need a bigger water area though. Nice thing is the actual Caiman species stay out in the open more.

prob is i dont know how big these guys get. I also like african dwarf crocs but have to clue on were to get them

I forget who the farm is that produces those (pretty sure they're down here though) but they claim the diamonds top out at 6' or so I believe. They're also supposed to be somewhat tamer than other caimans (I'm sure the captive breeding helps) but I wonder because both specs and blacks have a pretty nasty rep.

If they're even close to what they're advertised to be re: temperament and size I'd definitely choose a diamond over the dwarf species. Less shy, more aquatic...they just sound like they'd be more enjoyable to keep.

yeah agreed. but i serverly doubt those claims! both like u said have nasty reputation and are substatially larger than that. The breeder(diamond breeders i think is the name) claims females at 4' and males at 6'. just find that very very hard to believe.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd take the risk of ending up with a 10' monster.

Not sure how many croc forums there are out there, and how active they might be. I used to lurk a bit on the kingsnake forums but I can't remember how active the croc board was. This was years ago though, when the diamond hybrids were just starting to show up for sale...but you might find someone over there who's kept one long-term.

serched. every croc forum takes a month or more to get an answer and half the time its sarcastic a holes who have no clue about anything

Diamonds are Yacare X Spectacleds.......Talk to Mitch.....He isn't hard to find.....After all, he made the things......I find it hard to beleive someone so interested wouldn't go to the source first, or believe the person that has the most experience with them...............

i know what they are. ive done the research. im just sayin i find it hard to believe that 2 animals whose females and males get quite a bit larger than 4' and 6' respectivly, could produce an animals that only achieves those lengths. I love the animal and im not dissing the guy but im just sayin i find it hard to believe.

Genetics of hybrids are complex, the offspring isn't necessarily a big point between the two parents....look at the liger, male lion to female tiger and it gets larger than both (in some cases the weight of both parents combined). Bred the other way, male tiger to female lion, the tigon is half the size of a liger...weird huh?.

I'd say 4-6 feet is a reasonable estimation of the size of an adult, but keep in mind that's a big animal, if you've never seen a 6' caiman, visit the zoo and see for yourself.
