Diamond Sturgeons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
:( Just the other day I lost the second one. I dont know what happend? The first one didnt look good when I got him and was surprised how long he lasted. I was pretty upset, they where about... 5-6". But I did noticed when I got them, that one had a messed up fin, and the other one both of them where deformed in a way. And both their gills looked messed up to... like some of it was missing:confused: I want to try them out again, I just want to find a different person to buy them from.

Regarding keeping these fella's in the cold. I live in UK and sometimes it's so cold my pond has ice on top... It never completely freezes up as the current is too fast to allow that to happen. But yeah I have no heaters and I've had him a fair few years now, he's seen some real arctic conditions lol. The pond is deep around 5ft so I dunno exactly how cold it gets at the bottom but it's winter here now. So give it a few weeks till it get's real cold and I'll take the temperature and report back.

Crappy pic but I wasn't an MFK'er when it was taken, just one for the family album lol. Will post some nice pic's once it's a little warmer.

can you guys tell me where in Florida can we get these ?? I live in south Florida and have always wanted to raise sturgeons,, whenever i get the babies from the lfs they always end up dieing in a few weeks,, I want to get a couple at least 12".

it's not the breeders fault of your sturgeons death, but probably yours. sturgeons need well oxygenated water and seeing that that you live in FL and you kept them in room temperature (cuz you stated you don't have a chiller for them before) they simply died cuz lack of oxygen. don't get started again until you get a chiller.

There is a member that has a large Sturgeon housed in a community tank (video). If I remember correctly, the sturgeons offered now should be able to tolerate higher temp and no chiller is necessary. Hopefully, he will see this post and post the vid

They breed sturgeon selectively for warmer temp tolerance. Often hybridizing with A. ruthenus. I wasn't gonna say anything, due to risk of being flamed to death...but...

My LFS had a bunch of sturgeon in their 80 degree tropical system...and informed me they were warm-water sturgeon, and after arguing they should be kept in cooler water, I figured "WTH, I might as well try" lol. I've kept sturgeon in 68-72 degrees with no problem before. This guy was in an unheated tank for a month, and has slowly been bumped up to 78. So far, so good ... He's going in the pond at work if it doesn't work out lol.

For the sake of my prehistoric collection, I had to try :) Massive surface agitation is key for keeping them at warmer temps.

Ok first off, They where not healthy when they arrived to me. Both had defects on them. And alot of it. I know what they needed, Im not stupid. I do my share of reading anything and everything I can about a fish I decide to buy. So before you go and say its my fault... read everything first. And on another note, there was plenty on oxygen in their water. Thanks.
