Im setting up a 300 gallon stock tank in my basement, and through my research ive really been liking these turtles.

My questions are:

Are these every day pet store turtles? Or are they like the tigrinus catfish of fresh water turtles?

And where can i find a list of legal turtles to own in illinois?

Id like to have maybe a painted, a softshell, and a terrapin.

Any input or advice for my first turtle set up?!

Thanks guys!

You'll want to check your local DNR website for pet laws / regulations.

Not sure what you mean by "like the tigrinus cat" - do you mean they are rare? No, they are being bred by the thousands and very easily obtained online for cheap when small - but they are one of the turtles that are more closely regulated.

Mixing species like that is not usually a good idea in an aquarium - but if you wanted two, keep the softshell out of the picture for various reasons.

Terripans aren't that hard to come online. Just do a search terripin for sale. In NY they are illegal to own but I think you are OK in chicago.

Very cool, thanks guys. Yeah i realized the softshell wasnt a good idea. And for just beginning i will stay species only. Better to do my research first you know?

Anybody know where i can buy them online? Any reputable places?

A member here was selling some of the younglings that he bred not too long ago...look for his listing or check out kingsnake.com.

Thanks very much guys. However i have been reading that terrapins are brackish? I will probably skip them then. I really like mississippi maps and razorback musks.

They are technically a brackish species but the ones bred and raised in captivity can thrive when kept in clean, fresh water.
